KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? August has become the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, where international forces have started to go home and let Afghan forces take charge of securing their country.
A record 66 U.S. troops have died so far this month, eclipsing the 65 killed in July 2010, according to a tally by The Associated Press.
This month's death toll soared when 30 Americans ? most of them elite Navy SEALs ? were killed in a helicopter crash Aug. 6. They were aboard a Chinook shot down as it was flying in to help Army Rangers who had come under fire in Wardak province. It was the single deadliest incident of war being waged by Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces and insurgents.
On Tuesday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai used the start of a three-day Muslim holiday to plead with insurgents to lay down their arms and help rebuild the nation. Karzai wants Afghan security forces to take the lead in defending and protecting the nation by the end of 2014.
At a palace celebration, he also greeted eight boys and young men who had been asked to become suicide bombers, but then turned themselves in to Afghan authorities.
"Today we witness another good day for Afghanistan," he said. "We have with us those children who were forced by the Taliban ? or whoever was behind it ? to commit suicide attacks. They (the children) were saved using their wisdom."
He said five had been released to their parents, one was going to study in Turkey and authorities were still trying to find the relatives of the remaining two.
Karzai spoke on Eid al-Fitr, a holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which is observed by millions of Muslims around the world. The month of dawn-to-dusk fasting and extended prayer began Aug. 1.
Violence is being reported across the nation despite the U.S.-led coalition's drive to rout insurgents from their strongholds in the south.
At the same time, the U.S. military has begun to implement President Barack Obama's order to start withdrawing the 33,000 extra troops he dispatched to the war. He ordered 10,000 out this year and another 23,000 withdrawn by the summer of 2012, leaving about 68,000 U.S. troops on the ground. Although major combat units are not expected to start leaving until late fall, two National Guard regiments comprising about 1,000 soldiers started going home last month.
Aside from the 30 Americans killed in the Chinook crash, southwest of Kabul, 23 died this month in Kandahar and Helmand provinces in southern Afghanistan, the main focus of Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces. The remaining 13 were killed in eastern Afghanistan.
Besides the 66 Americans killed so far this month, the NATO coalition suffered the loss of two British, four French, one New Zealander, one Australian, one Polish and five other troops whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed. One of the five was killed in a roadside bombing Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said. No other details were released.
So far this year, 403 international service members, including at least 299 Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan.
Although the science of psychology is new in relation to the age of human life on earth, psychologists learn new things every day, by studying humans and trying to understand why we do what we do and why we are who we are. Your target market for this information is going to be someone like you. Someone who has similar goals, interests, and passions. You can find these people by looking through groups on facebook, twitter, and other social networking sites, and by locating forums and chat rooms related to your industry.
The bottom line is, that most of us have a skill set or a talent that others can benefit from. If you offer it easily, without strings or expectations, then people will keep that in mind. It?s about creating relationships and providing value ? building trust and respect. Being consistent in providing good value to your connections is the best investment you can make of your time. For a couple that once tried to hide their relationship, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are very much out in the open now. Case in point:
During the Selena-hosted pre-show at this evening's MTV Video Music Awards, Gomez interviewed her boyfriend and tried to ask about his nomination in the category of Best Male Video. But all Justin wanted to talk about was his pet snake... named Johnson.
He then leaned in and gave Selena a long smooch, as she tried to remain professional and millions of girls around the country bowed their head in sadness. Watch now:
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. ? From North Carolina to New Jersey, Hurricane Irene appeared to have fallen short of the doomsday predictions. But with rivers still rising, and roads impassable because of high water and fallen trees, it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known.
More than 4.5 million homes and businesses along the East Coast lost power, and at least 11 deaths were blamed on the storm. But as day broke Sunday, surprisingly light damage was reported in many places, with little more than downed trees and power lines.
"I think it's a little strong to say we dodged a bullet. However, it certainly could have turned out worse for the Hampton Roads area" in Virginia, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco.
At the same time, officials warned of the possibility of severe flooding over the next few days as runoff from the storm makes its way into creeks and rivers. In some parts of the Northeast, the ground was soggy even before the storm because of an extremely rainy August.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett cautioned: "The rivers may not crest until Tuesday or Wednesday. This isn't just a 24-hour event."
Irene brought rain of six inches to a foot to many places along the East Coast. The storm was still pummeling the New York City area on Sunday morning, dropping below hurricane strength but still dangerous with 65 mph winds and heavy downpours.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell had initially warned that Irene could be a "catastrophic" monster with record storm surges of up to 8 feet.
But in Virginia Beach, the city posted on Twitter late Saturday that initial reports were promising, with the resort area suffering minimal damage. And in Ocean City, Md., Mayor Rick Meehan reported: "Scattered power outages. No reports of major damage!"
In Lusby, Md., Constellation Energy Nuclear Group said one of two nuclear reactors at Calvert Cliffs went off-line automatically because of Irene's winds. Constellation said the plant was safe.
Floodwaters were rising across New Jersey, and more than 2,000 National Guardsmen were helping with search and rescue work as officials assessed the damage. The Raritan River, which caused disastrous flooding after it was swelled by rain from Hurricane Floyd 12 years ago, was not expected to crest until Sunday evening.
Still, with skies clearing Sunday morning, some of those living on the coast were cautiously optimistic.
After spending the night hunkered down in his Pleasantville, N.J., home overnight without electricity, Harry Webber went outside in a fruitless search for place to buy a cup of coffee.
"I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of my town is still in one piece," he said.
Late last week, Irene was a fearsome Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of around 115 mph as it barreled across open water toward the East Coast. Forecasters predicted it could grow to a scarier Category 4 before blowing ashore.
By Friday, though, the storm began losing steam. It came ashore the next day in North Carolina a mere Category 1 with winds of about 85 mph, and had weakened into a tropical storm by the time its eye hit New York City on Sunday.
North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said that Irene inflicted significant damage along her state's coast, but that the full extent was unclear because some areas were unreachable because of high water or downed power lines.
Perdue planned an aerial tour Sunday of the hardest-hit counties after TV coverage showed downed trees, toppled utility poles and power lines and mangled awnings.
Officials in North Carolina's Dare County said they were advised there was extensive flooding that needed to be checked out.
Elsewhere, authorities suggested Irene didn't create the kind of havoc that had been anticipated.
"We were prepared for a lot worse, but we got lucky on this one," said Bruce Shell, New Hanover County, N.C., manager.
He said many of the 70,000 homes that lost power Saturday were back online in the evening and a wastewater spill at Wrightsville Beach appeared to be minor.
Pinehurst dentist Harwell Palmer said his home in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., lost a few pieces of siding and there was some street flooding, but a pier that took a pounding from the waves was still standing. The storm did gobble up some of the sand.
"The main concern we will have going forward is the loss of beach," he said.
The question still facing the region was whether Irene's effects over the next few days would match the mess left behind by such storms as Floyd and Isabel.
In 1999, Floyd dropped at least 15 inches of rain on eastern North Carolina. The flooding was the most damaging in the state's history, topping $3 billion in North Carolina. Four years later, Isabel brought hurricane conditions to eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, causing about $1 billion in damage.
In the resort town of Ocean City, Md., damage appeared minimal. A few small trees along a major road had been uprooted. Scattered piles of sand about two feet high covered areas of the boardwalk. The end of a wooden pier was sagging and a wooden railing was askew.
At the Quietstorm surf shop on the boardwalk, part of a wall where the shop's name is advertised had been torn off, exposing wiring and scattering insulation. Locals, though, said they had seen worse during ordinary storms.
"I think we dodged a bullet," said LeAnn Price.

Founder Hamid Zaidi wowed attendees and judges at the Evernote Trunk Conference with an Android application that stores links to Evernote content on physical NFC tags (see above). Create a link to an Evernote note and slap an NFC tag on any object you'd like. Then, simply touch your device to the tag to open your note.
Touchanote, says Zaidi, who spoke with Mashable in an exclusive post-win interview, proffers a right-here, right-now consumer use case for NFC technology.
Much ado is being made about NFC-enabled payments, but the infrastructure and business adoption required to support payments is likely still two years out, he says. "Meanwhile, millions of lonely NFC phone users out there are excited to use the technology now," says Zaidi. "We want to be the face for the consumer-driven NFC market."
Touchanote is like a backup disk for your brain: Evernote serves as the memory bank and NFC markers make for physical placeholders that route you back to important information. Instructions or passwords stored on tags stuck on associated objects make for practical use cases. Tags on photo frames, however, could call up more memories in digital photo form.
The application connects the digital and physical realms in a way that brings Evernote CEO Phil Libin's vision of a "trusted second brain for all your lifetime memories" to fruition.
Touchanote has received an encouraging post-victory reception. The application launched on the Android store last Thursday and users have already ordered 500 tags -- tags are sold in 1, 10 and 25 batches for $3, $10 and $20 respectively.
The startups biggest challenge, says Zaidi, will be to meet demand with enough tags, which are supplied by a third-party manufacturer. He doesn't seem to the think that the lack of NFC-enabled devices for sale will work against the company.
"This is a tangible market that people have disregarded," he says, citing a forecast that more than 40 million NFC phones will ship this year. "I think that is a huge and blank canvas."
In the past few years, real estate has seen an unprecedented level of foreclosures on both residential and commercial properties. Banks are desperate to be rid of these bank owned properties, and many commercial owners feel the same way. Making commercial short sales is a great way to fill these needs and make a bit of profit while you?re at it. Karen Hanover explains how.
Understanding Bank Short Sales
The first thing to understand is what exactly commercial short sales are, and why they happen. The common story of a short sale goes as follows: a property owner owns a debt on his property that he cannot repay, most likely because the property values have depreciated due to the sorry state of the real estate market. He?s missed a few payments on his mortgage and is facing imminent foreclosure. However, even the banks don?t like initiating foreclosures; they are a lot of work and still leave a stain on the bank?s records. So the lender may decide that it?s better to accept a loss on the property than to foreclose on it, and they let it go for a discount. Then an enterprising buyer (that?s you) can sweep it up and resell it for a profit.
Making the Most of Money Making Opportunities
That is the theory, of course?the real trick is choosing the right properties and pulling off the resale. To do this, you must possess several qualities. First, you must be a great networker and possess the commitment to sniff out any and all money making opportunities for both acquiring new bank owned properties, and profitably releasing the ones you own. Second, you must be serious and trainable. Real estate investing can be a tricky business with a lot of relevant laws. You must become an expert on foreclosures and foreclosure law in a fairly short time and apply that knowledge consistently. And last, but certainly not least, you must be determined. In the face of setbacks, it is not uncommon to feel discouraged. You must persevere, however. In every failure is the opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

One final note of caution?although free articles about short sales are a great place to start educating yourself about the whole process, you will eventually run out of information and have to turn to a paid real estate training course if you really want to learn enough to make money. These training courses from reported ?gurus? are unregulated and full of scams. A good way to test whether you?re signing up for the real deal or not is to pump them for free information. They should respond with a lot of what is listed here on real estate investing, and on various internet sources. If not, there?s a chance that you?ll blow thousands of dollars just to learn what anyone with an internet connection can learn!

Young the Giant know you've probably got a few questions in the lead up to their performance on this Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. Like, for example, who the heck are they?
"Yeah," frontman Sameer Gadhia laughed. "You might not know who we are, but we're in Hollywood already preparing [for the show], and we're very, very excited to play for you guys."
"We're definitely in the Florence slot," Gadhia said. "We consider it a real honor."
But that brings us to another question: Just what will that performance entail? Well, from the sound of things, it could be one for the ages ... the Mesozoic ages.
"For our VMA performance, [guitarist] Jacob [Tilley] is actually at work, breeding pterodactyls, and he's prepared for just this one event," Gadhia smiled. "We're going to be flying in on pterodactyls. They're going to do an air show; they're going to drop us in, fireworks, we're going to have Jimi Hendrix performing, it's going to be amazing."
Seriously. And while we suspect Gadhia was joking (especially since Tilley added "We're not really doing any gimmicks, it's just us doing what we do: playing live with lots of energy,") there's no debating the fact that their VMA performance is a very big deal for Young the Giant. And for proof, all you have to do is check their schedule, which, until very recently, included high-profile slots at the U.K.'s Reading and Leeds Festivals.
"We canceled Reading and Leeds because of the VMAs," Gadhia said. "I mean, we always watched them, ever since we were little ... and we're from Los Angeles, so we figured it would be a great opportunity. Hopefully people in the U.K. will forgive us. I know some people are already annoyed."

The greenback rose against other major currencies on Thursday on renewed risk aversion together with the selloff in U.S. and European equities on speculation that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will not unveil further monetary easing at Fed?s annual economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.
Versus the Japanese yen, although the greenback dropped briefly from Asian high of 77.15 to 76.85, the greenback rose strongly on renewed cross selling of jpy on speculation that Japan?s package may boost USD funding as Japan?s $100 billion credit line unveiled on Wednesday for companies investing overseas, tapping its foreign reserves despite being called ?measures to address JPY appreciation.? The pair eventually climbed to a 2-week high of 77.70 in NY afternoon on renewed risk aversion before retreating.
The single currency traded narrowly in Asia and then rose to its day high of 1.4475 in European morning on the initial gain in European stocks before retreating. Despite euro?s recovery to 1.4457 in NY morning, price then tumbled sharply to 1.4328 due to the selloff of U.S. and European equities together with comments from spokesmen for the IMF and German Finance Ministry before staging a recovery to 1.4389.
The IMF spokesman said ?global economic activity has weakened, become more uneven, outlook has deteriorated.? Later, the spokesman from German Finance Ministry said ?we are not planning a general short-selling ban.?
The British pound traded sideways in Asian session and briefly recovered to 1.6398 in European morning. However, cable tumbled in tandem with euro to 1.6260 before stabilising.
On the data front, U.S. initial jobless claims were worse-than-expected at 417K vs forecast of 405K, the prior figure was revised up to 412K. U.K. CBI retail sales balance for Aug. was weaker than expected at -14 vs forecast of -5.
The DJI fell by 170.89 points, or 1.51%, to 11149.82. FTSE-100, CAC-40, and DAX were down by 1.44%, 0.65%, and 1.71% respectively.

Japan national CPI, core CPI, Tokyo CPI, Swiss KOF indicator, U.S. GDP annualised, GDP deflator, PCE core, U. Michigan survey.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? A six-second clip on Chinese state television has provided a rare glimpse into purported cyber hacking attacks launched by the country's military, despite long-standing official denials that the government engages in such activity.
In an episode titled "The Internet storm is here," CCTV-7, China's official military channel, had experts discussing the different methods of cyberattacks and U.S. cyber operations. (http://military.cntv.cn/program/jskj/20110717/100139.shtml)
About halfway through the 20-minute episode, a user is seen operating a cursor on a screen that displays two options, a "www denial-of-service attack" and "distributed denial-of-service attack." A denial-of-service attack is a basic hacking attack that brings down a website by spamming it with data.
The screen then changes, showing a box with the words "select attack target" and "input target IP address." A scrolling marquee at the top of the box reads "China's People's Liberation Army Electronic Engineering Academy."
The user then selects Minghui.org, a website of the banned spiritual sect Falun Gong, from a dropdown menu containing a list of other Falun Gong sites and clicks the "attack" button.
It is unclear if the program on the screen shown is a mock-up, or when the clip was filmed. But China has consistently -- sometimes angrily -- denied having anything to do with hacking attacks.
EVIDENCE?
The existence of the piece, which appears to have been shown in July, was reported on Wednesday by China SignPost website (www.chinasignpost.com) which noted it was "visual evidence" to undermine China's official denials of involvement in hacking.
As of midday on Thursday, the page with the clip on Chinese state television's website was no longer accessible. However, the clip was reposted on other video sharing websites and is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Wu1HlZbBk
The United States says that many hacking attacks appear to come from China, often targeting human rights groups as well as U.S. companies.
In its annual report to the U.S. Congress on China's military on Wednesday, the Pentagon warned that hacking attacks from China could one day be used for overt military means, rather than just trying to access data.
"The accesses and skills required for those intrusions are similar to those necessary to conduct computer network attacks," the report said. "Developing capabilities for cyberwarfare is consistent with authoritative PLA military writings."
Google, the world's largest search engine, partially pulled out of China last year after concerns of censorship and a serious hacking episode.
Google, who said the attacks originated from China, was one of the dozens of high profile companies targeted in an ultra-sophisticated cyberattack named "Operation Aurora" that took place in the second half of 2009. Yahoo, Adobe and Dow Chemical were also reportedly among the targets.
In June this year, Google said its Gmail product had suffered a cyberattack originating from China that was aimed at stealing passwords and information from high level U.S. government officials and Chinese activists.
China also says it is a victim of hacking.
The cyberattacks add to the long list of tensions between the United States and China that span trade issues, human rights, the value of the yuan and Taiwan.

America?s trial lawyers are getting ready to make the case against one of their biggest targets in years: Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

That?s a potential financial boon to a president who has unsettled trial lawyers with his own rhetorical gestures in the direction of tort reform. A general election pitting Barack Obama and Perry could turn otherwise apathetic trial lawyers into a phalanx of pro-Obama bundlers and super PAC donors.
?If this guy emerges, if he?s a serious candidate, if he doesn?t blow up in the next couple weeks, it?s going to motivate many in the plaintiffs? bar to dig deeper to support President Obama,? said Sean Coffey, a former securities litigator who ran for attorney general of New York last year. ?That will end up driving a lot of money to the Democratic side.?

That will likely include a federal super PAC that could take in the kind of massive donations that are permitted in Texas.

Subsequently we were led to the bouldering gym, where we were give a chance to try climbing without the safety harness, since the floor was all cushioned. Did a few rounds of those before I forearms eventually gave way.

On a side note, my leg still felt a little sore at the lower part of the ankle, around the joints. I do believe i can finally run now, as the posterior shin splint seem to have disappeared. But perhaps it would be wise to strengthen my Achilles tendon first before going on an about with running.
