Government, Community To Blame For Martin County Brush Fire Hotspot

WPBF.com

A Florida Division of Forestry spokeswoman said land owners in Martin County are not doing as good of a job protecting land from brush fires as neighboring counties are doing.

The critique comes after a brush fire burned close to homes off U.S. Highway 1 and Seabranch Boulevard in Hobe Sound.

"This area is just an area that has not been managed properly. It needs more management done. We need more burning, mowing and chopping in this area," said Division of Forestry spokeswoman Melissa Yunas.

Yunas said Martin County is drier than neighboring counties. But she said desires and expectations from the community have thwarted proper land management.

"It's really the person who owns the property," said Yunas, explaining that governmental and private property owners usually bow to the community to keep the land in a natural state. Yunas said this gives brush fires additional fuel to burn out of control.
