What was meant to be a fun night for a Londonderry Township girl took a frightening turn Saturday as her home caught fire and was all but destroyed in the process.
Alesha Buller said her trailer went up in flames during a sleep-over party for her daughter's 11th birthday while seven children were inside the Crestview Village home.
"By the time we walked in the room there was no getting anything out. It was just so engulfed in flames," said Buller.
Everyone made it out in time and no one was hurt, except for the family cat, which was lost in the blaze.
"We already lost a cat. What if it was a kid?" said Beau Messersmith, who shared the home with Buller.
The family told abc27 that officials blamed the fire on a space heater that sparked a mattress while heating up an empty room.? But when fire crews arrived after it started around 9:30pm, there wasn't much property left to save.
"We lost everything. There is nothing salvageable in that house. We bought a new computer, a Playstation -- it's all gone," Buller said.
Neighbors?said the trailer has a history of problems and that it saw two other fires within the past several years.
"We're living in trash cans. Things are dilapidated," said neighbor Chris Metzler.
"It's the same situation with other trailers," said Lynn Kerr, president of the tenants' association. "Someone could have gotten hurt, there were children living here."
Now, with a little help from friends and the Red Cross, the family is just trying to get by.
"My son was crying. It was just traumatic for all of us," said Buller.
If you would like to help the family, you can donate to a local chapter of the Red Cross.
