Getting a slow start this morning, but I see bright sunshine and two of our four family members are off to school/work, so that's a good start!? Wow, what a weekend.? After a week with both of our sons home sick, I was feeling a bit stir-crazy and desperate for some quiet solitude, so I just left on Friday!?
Some friends loaned me their beach condo for a quiet getaway, and I drove down there to spend 24 hours on my own, taking care of no one but myself.? It was....weird, but good.? It took me a while to actually relax, but the downtime was a welcome respite.? What a strange world where doing dishes takes only two minutes (wash 1 plate, wash 1 fork), and I can do anything I want!? I got 3 hours of audio book time on the way there and back.? I didn't do as much reading as I'd planned because I stopped at the library on my way and picked up the entire 7-hour mini-series of Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth, which I read and loved last summer.? I didn't watch the entire series (still have 2 episodes to go), but it was fun to just lie on the couch and escape into the story! Of course, I returned home to all the same stuff - messy house, sick kids, long to-do list - and spent the rest of the weekend working on some urgent things with looming deadlines, but the time away definitely helped.
So, here's what we read last week:
- I finished middle-grade novel The Whisper by Emma Clayton, sequel to The Roar which my son and I both loved.? I think the first book was a bit better, but this novel provided a satisfying ending.
- Yesterday, I finally started to read Skeletons at the Feast, a novel set in 1945 Europe by Chris Bohjalian, my neighborhood book group's choice for this month.? We meet on Wednesday, so I am afraid there is virtually no chance I can finish this 360-page novel before our discussion.? Since Bohjalian is known for his surprise endings, this could be trouble - I may have to lock myself in the bathroom for part of our discussion.? Damn that 7-hour mini-series!
- I am listening to an audio book, Falling Together by Marisa De los Santos. I enjoyed reading her earlier novel, Love Walked In, and am enjoying this one so far, too. It was fun to lose myself in the story during my drive this weekend, instead of my usual routine of listening in 10-minutes spurts.
- My husband, Ken, is still reading an e-book, Big Lake by Nick Russell, on his Kindle Fire, and Another Thing to Fall by Laura Lippman, a hardcover novel.
- Jamie, 17, is almost finished with Timeline by Michael Crichton, one of my favorites of Crichton's many exciting novels.? Despite several sick days last week, his reading has slowed down because he's hooked on a video game!? With his brother also home sick last week, they played non-stop (one of the things I was eager to escape from!)
- Craig, 14, is reading The Secret of Pirates Hill, a classic Hardy Boys book and is enjoying the familiar, fast-paced mystery.

The findings, published in the Feb. 28 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, describe the regulation of a family of cells that project throughout the nervous system and originate in an area of the brain call the hypothalamus, which has been long known to control energy balances.
Scientists and pharmaceutical companies are closely investigating the role of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons in controlling food intake and energy. Previous studies have shown that MCH makes lab animals eat more, sleep more, and have less energy. In contrast, other hypothalamic neurons use the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) as a neurotransmitter, and these neurons reduce food intake and body weight, and increase physical activity.
The Yale study of brains of mice shows that the two systems appear to act in direct opposition, to help the organism keep these crucial functions in balance.
Although TRH is normally an excitatory neurotransmitter, the Yale study shows that in mice TRH inhibits MCH cells by increasing inhibitory synaptic input. In contrast, TRH had little effect on other types of neurons also involved in energy regulation.
"That these two types of neurons interact at the synaptic level gives us clues as to how the brain controls the amount of food we eat, and how much we sleep," said Anthony van den Pol, senior author and professor of neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine.
The co-author of the paper is Xiaobing Zhang of Yale.

But al-Askari's comments provide the first confirmation that Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-backed insurgent group, was responsible for the 2006 kidnapping of al-Taie after the Iraqi-born soldier sneaked out of the heavily guarded Green Zone in Baghdad to visit his wife and family on a Muslim holiday.
Al-Askari said Asaib Ahl al-Haq last week acknowledged killing al-Taie within a year of his October 2006 abduction. He said he did not know exactly when al-Taie was killed.

In an interview with The Associated Press, al-Askari said he supervised the negotiations for al-Taie's body and was present when Asaib Ahl al-Haq turned over a simple wooden casket containing the remains to Iraqi authorities on Feb. 22. He said the casket was immediately transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
"The Iraqi authorities did not open the casket, which was not heavy," al-Askari said. He said the negotiations for al-Taie's body had been taking place "for a while."
Al-Taie moved to the United States at age 12 after his family left Iraq in the late 1970s, when Saddam Hussein was ascending to power. His family described him as a pilot and airplane mechanic who lived with his parents in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He met his wife during a trip to Iraq shortly after Saddam's fall from power in 2003. In December 2004, he joined an Army reserve program for native speakers of Arabic and other strategic languages, and deployed a year later to Iraq, where he worked with a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Baghdad until he was kidnapped in 2006.
At the time he was seized, kidnappings for ransom or political motives, mostly of Iraqis but also many foreigners, were common. The February 2006 bombing of a Shiite mosque by Sunni insurgents caused retaliatory bloodshed to spiral, and death squads roamed Iraq's streets.

Officials believe there are fewer than 1,000 Asaib Ahl al-Haq militiamen, and their leaders live in Iran.
The Pentagon has said it recently received remains that have been confirmed as al-Taie's at the U.S. military mortuary in Dover, Del. It offered no details, and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad referred questions Monday to the Pentagon.
More cities consider parades for Iraq War vets
A U.S. official with knowledge of the situation said al-Taie's body arrived in Dover Feb. 25 and his family was notified early on Feb. 26. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the sensitivity of the details of family notification.
Al-Askari said al-Taie's remains were handed over as part of an amnesty exchange agreement with Asaib Ahl al-Haq, under which the group will not face criminal prosecution or penalties if it disarms or turns over prisoners.

"There will be no persecution or legal measures against the Asaib people in the case of al-Taie," al-Askari said.
Al-Taie's uncle, Entifadh Qanbar, expressed resigned dismay Monday that al-Taie's killers might not be punished, but said he had not yet been notified by any government about the circumstances surrounding the killing.
"I have to see the details but I don't think a murder should stand without the law taking place," Qanbar said Monday in a telephone interview from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. "Everybody who commits murders should face court."
He indicated that Iraqi authorities should take responsibility for prosecuting the killing. "I don't know if the United States could do anything without the Iraqis," Qanbar said.

He handled Mr. Braun?s sample consistent with instructions issued by our jointly retained collection agency. The Arbitrator found that those instructions were not consistent with certain language in our program, even though the instructions were identical to those used by many other drug programs ? including the other professional sports and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
?Our program is not ?fatally flawed.?? Changes will be made promptly to clarify the instructions provided to collectors regarding when samples should be delivered to FedEx based on the arbitrator?s decision.? Neither Mr. Braun nor the MLBPA contended in the grievance that his sample had been tampered with or produced any evidence of tampering.?

?Our Joint Drug Program stands as strong, as accurate and as reliable as any in sport, both before and after the Braun decision. The breach of confidentiality associated with this matter is unfortunate but, after investigation, we are confident that it was not caused by the Commissioner?s Office, the MLBPA or anyone associated in any way with the Program. In all other respects, the appeals process worked as designed; the matter was vigorously contested and the independent and neutral arbitrator issued a decision deserving of respect by both bargaining parties.
?As has happened several times before with other matters, this case?has focused the parties? attention on an aspect of our Program that can be improved. After discussions with the Commissioner?s Office, we are confident that all collections going forward will follow the parties? agreed-upon rules.?

Hospital choice for emergency care can improve survival by 40%
DENVER, CO ? When a medical emergency occurs and an ambulance appears at your location, you may have the opportunity to select your preferred hospital. According to a new report, your choice of hospitals may determine whether you live or die.
HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals, which was released on February 21, found significant differences in the risk adjusted mortality rates for patients admitted to hospital emergency departments. The rating agency is reportedly the leading provider of information to assist consumers make an informed decision regarding a physician or hospital. The information is sorted both by hospital and market area.
To compile the findings, Healthgrades reviewed the medical records of more than seven million Medicare patient records presenting at emergency departments from 2008 to 2010. Included in the survey were the following diagnoses: Bowel Obstruction; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); Diabetic Acidosis and Coma; Gastrointestinal Bleed; Heart Attack; Heart Failure; Pancreatitis; Pneumonia; Pulmonary Embolism; Respiratory Failure; Sepsis (infection); and Stroke. The report included only those patients admitted to the hospital from the emergency room for further medical treatment; thus, their analysis was limited to patients who received the full continuum of care.
Of all analyzed hospitals, 263 that performed in the top five percent in the nation were designated as Emergency Medicine Excellence Award? hospitals. A full listing of these hospitals, by city, can be found online at HealthGrades.com. ?It is imperative that anyone experiencing a medical emergency go directly to the closest hospital, especially in the event of a heart attack or stroke,? noted Dr. Arshad Rahim, report author and Director of Accelerated Clinical Excellence at HealthGrades. He added, ?That said, our study findings show the care you receive once admitted to the hospital can also make the difference between life and death. We encourage all patients to educate themselves about the quality of emergency medical providers in their area and to choose a top performing hospital whenever there is a choice.?
Other significant findings by HealthGrades include:
- From 2008 to 2010, emergency room admissions for heart attack were
- down 1.7% and stroke admissions were up 2.2% among Medicare recipients.
- For the group of patients studied, Emergency Medicine Excellence hospitals had, on average,
- 41.52% lower risk-adjusted mortality than all other hospitals across the 12 diagnoses studied.
- If all hospitals performed at the level of the Emergency Medicine Excellence hospitals from 2008 through 2010, an additional 170,856 people could have potentially survived their emergency hospitalization.
- More than 61% of hospital admissions among seniors begin in the emergency
- department, higher than any other age group.
Approximately 36% (94 out of 263) of the Emergency Medicine Excellence hospitals are located in eight dominant market areas (DMAs): Chicago, IL (18); Los Angeles, CA (15); Baltimore, MD (12); Cleveland, OH (12); Phoenix - Prescott, AZ (12); St. Louis, MO (9); Cincinnati, OH (8); and Detroit, MI (8).
The top 10 cities with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality for patients admitted through the emergency department are: Milwaukee, WI; Phoenix - Prescott, AZ; Cincinnati, OH; West Palm Beach, FL; Baltimore, MD; Traverse City, MI; Dayton, OH; Cleveland, OH; Fargo, ND; and Detroit, MI.
To be included in the analysis, hospitals had to meet minimum thresholds in terms of patient volumes, quality ratings, and the range of services provided. The hospital ratings were independently created; no hospital could either opt-in or opt-out of being rated, and no hospital
paid to be rated.

Pa. man busted on drug warrant after casino win
ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) ? A man accused of dealing drugs had his luck run out when he won $2,500 playing blackjack at a casino near Philadelphia.
Altoona police say 34-year-old Mateen Johnson was arrested Saturday because he had to produce identification to cash out his winnings at Philadelphia Park Racetrack & Casino in Bucks County. Casino officials learned Johnson was wanted for drug offenses in Altoona and called authorities.
The Altoona Mirror (http://bit.ly/AfbcNp) reports Tuesday that Johnson told police he expected to be arrested soon and was trying to win enough at blackjack to make bail.
Online court records don't list an attorney for Johnson, who was wanted on separate drug delivery charges filed last year.
Johnson remained in the Blair County Prison on Monday.
