Hands-on photos of Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 - two iPod Touch competitors (Digital Trends)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Samsung re-revealed its Galaxy Player line of Wi-Fi-only Android devices in New York last night and we were on hand to check them out. The numbers correspond directly to screen sizes, meaning Samsung is releasing 4-inch and 5-inch Android handsets to compete with the iPod Touch. The units on hand were still running an older version of TouchWiz, still with the iPhone-like square buttons and no motion gestures, but they did the job well enough. Both units are nearly identical. They both run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and come with 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot that can hold up to 32GB of additional storage. Both have 3.2MP rear cameras and VGA front cameras, though the 5.0 has an LED flash as well. If you?re looking for a $250-$400 Android player for music, media, and apps at home, these appear to do the trick.

Ellen DeGeneres: 'I'm fine' after chest pain scare (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Ellen DeGeneres says she's fine after feeling chest pains that prompted paramedics to respond to the Burbank studio where her daytime talk show is taped.

The comedian says in a statement issued Monday that she doesn't know what caused the chest pain "but it's fine."

DeGeneres says she started having chest pains Sunday night and woke up feeling tightness and heaviness in her chest. She compared the feeling to having two cats on her chest.

She said the pains lingered when she came to work, so she called 911 "to be safe." She joked the paramedics may have overreacted, saying multiple trucks and ambulances showed up on the Warner Brothers lot and appeared "like one marching band short of a parade."

She thanked the medical responders "for caring so much."

British sitcom writer David Croft dies at 89 (AP)

LONDON ? Television writer David Croft, who helped create much-loved British sitcoms "Dad's Army" and "Are You Being Served?," has died aged 89.

Croft's agent Tim Hancock, said the writer died Tuesday at his holiday home in Portugal.

Several of his comedies had military settings, including "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" ? set in wartime India and Burma ? and "Dad's Army," about a hapless Home Guard unit.

Co-created with Jimmy Perry, "Dad's Army" is considered a comedy classic, and is still frequently rerun more than 40 years after its debut.

With Jeremy Lloyd, Croft wrote several series, including "'Allo 'Allo!" ? set in the unlikely comic environment of Nazi-occupied France ? and the perennially popular department-store sitcom "Are You Being Served?"

American killed by Afghan embassy worker

An Afghan employee of the U.S. government opened fire inside a CIA office in Kabul on Sunday evening, killing an American and injuring a second, U.S. and Afghan officials said, in the second major breach of embassy security in two weeks.

The killing adds to a sense of insecurity already heightened by a 20 hour-siege of the embassy district in mid-September, and the assassination a week later of the government's peace envoy, former President Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The CIA compound is one of the most heavily guarded in Kabul, and has been off-limits for almost a decade, since shortly after the Taliban's fall from power in 2001.

It also lies at the heart of the capital's heavily-guarded military, political and diplomatic district, a virtual "green zone" that is almost impossible for ordinary Afghans to enter.

It was not clear if the U.S. citizens were victims of a rogue employee who had been won over to the insurgent cause, or just the escalation of an argument in a city were tensions are high and many people carry guns. There are precedents for both.

The "lone attacker" was killed, and the injured U.S. citizen was taken to a military hospital, U.S. embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said on Monday.

"There was a shooting incident at an annex of the U.S. embassy in Kabul last night involving an Afghan employee who was killed. The motivation for the attack is still under investigation at this time," Sundwall said.

The shooting follows a string of attacks by Afghan security forces against their NATO-led mentors carried out either by "rogue" soldiers and police or by insurgents who have infiltrated security forces.

The Taliban could not immediately be reached for comment.

'Serious trust' issues
Waheed Mujhda of the Afghan Analytical and Advisory Center in Kabul, said the incident characterized the level of mistrust between the United States and its Afghan allies.

"It's not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last, he said.

"This is a big security concern for the Americans and it shows they can't fully trust their Afghan staff. But the Americans never want to accept that there are serious trust and cooperation issues and they have encountered that in their security operations with Afghan forces."

The shooting happened at the Ariana hotel, just a few blocks away from the Presidential Palace and the U.S. embassy, and used by the Central Intelligence Agency as a Kabul base.

Kabul Police Chief Ayub Salangi said there had been an exchange of fire at the hotel, which he described as an "office" for the CIA, but declined further comment on what happened in an area where access is restricted even for Afghan forces.

The shooting came the same month that insurgents took over an unfinished high-rise near the city's heavily guarded military, political and diplomatic heart and showered rockets down on the U.S. embassy and NATO headquarters.

That attack lasted 20 hours, and the U.S. has blamed it on the Haqqani network of militants, who were long based in Pakistan's lawless frontier regions although they now say they have moved back into Afghanistan.

Washington accused Pakistan's spy service of offering them support.

But senior Pakistani officials have lashed out against the allegations, accusing the U.S. of trying to make Pakistan a scapegoat for its troubled war in Afghanistan.

The U.S. has given Pakistan billions of dollars in military and economic aid, but the relationship has been riven by mistrust.

'Big loss'
Sunday's assault also follows closely on last week's assassination of former Afghan President Rabbani, who was leading a government effort to broker peace with the Taliban. He was killed when an insurgent who had claimed to be a peace emissary exploded a bomb hidden in his turban upon meeting Rabbani.

President Hamid Karzai called Rabbani's death a "big loss" and said greater security measures should be taken to protect top Afghan figures, including religious clerics and tribal leaders. Intelligence officials have said one person has been arrested in connection with the assassination and that authorities were close to uncovering the details of the killing.

NATO bases and embassies have ramped up security following a number of attacks over the past year by Afghan security forces against their counterparts. Since March 2009, the coalition has recorded at least 20 incidents where a member of the Afghan security forces or someone wearing a uniform used by them killed coalition forces. Thirty-six coalition troops have died. It is not known how many of the 282,000 members of the Afghan security forces were killed.

In December 2009, an al-Qaida double agent blew himself up at a CIA base in eastern Khost province, killing seven CIA employees. The attacker, a Jordanian man named Humam al-Balawi, had been brought into the base because he had claimed to be able to reach high-level al-Qaida leaders.

In the south, meanwhile, a NATO service member was killed in a bomb attack Monday, making a total of 38 international troopers killed so far this month.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Bla Bla ? CBS 102: Lessons in Strategy Development

To create a robust corporate strategy, organizations must conduct strategy development that starts with a clear understanding of its business positioning and identified strategic barriers to growth. The next steps include forming what the future state vision of the company is and then delving into the details of planning how to get to that state. To properly gauge and analyze your strategic challenges, you must begin with a comprehensive current state understanding of your situation. Proper strategy development involves more than a focus on maximizing profitability. Strategy is about value innovation, strategy is about selectivity, and strategy is about flexibility.

An important tool used in strategic planning is scenario planning. An important task in the scenario planning framework is defining the primary axes of uncertainty after building a 2-axis scenario map. Scenario planning is also called scenario thinking and scenario planning analysis. Scenario planning is used to help businesses plan for and make flexible future estate corporate plans. Oftentimes, the scenario planning process is performed in a workshop environment, where decision makers, executives, subject matter experts, and externaladvisors, are gathered in a 2-3 day off-site location to decide on various future state situations.

Bower emphasizes the strategic planning and budgeting processes are in the focus of the strategy development process. Strategic intent is defined as the perceived and communicated corporate strategy. Capital market context is also looked at, which is defined as demands and influence of providers, including investors. Bowers school of thought is called the Resource Allocation Process RAP business framework. Resource allocation based strategy planning and budgeting is a bottoms up driven way to identification and picking of business priorities. Within the Resource Allocation business framework, when market context is discussed, we are evaluating the demands of the existing customers, and technology development. Organizational context is composed of organizational governance and the org structure, basis of performance metrics and rewards, and managements core beliefs and strategic frames.

The way business leaders evaluate and analyze strategy within that of modern business organizations has been shaped by militant strategists since 400BC when Sun Tzu wrote the Art of War. Sun Tzu preached to know and attack the enemys strategy. In Sun Tzus Art of War, he wrote about several fundamental factors in military strategy and each of these factors relates to a popular concept of business strategy. Sun Tzu hinted at indirect strategies when Sun Tzu proclaimed winning without fighting is the highest of skill on the battleground. Sun Tzus thoughts about the factor of terrain, in todays business landscape, translates to markets, industry structures, market positions, and industry forces.

In the strategy development process, it is noteworthy to point out that your company should conduct rigorous market analysis. Doing proper market analysis involves both supply analysis and demand analysis, which includes segmentation and segment analysis, understanding consumer buying behavior, and industry analysis. There are also several market place analysis characteristics, including market place sizing, pricing changes, research and development, market place characteristics, market force structure, and current trends. Proper market analysis involves defining the market size and the study scale, understanding the core industry issues, and planning for the future. There are several market environment analysis characteristics, including ones that are socio-demographic, economic, legal, technological, and current trends. It is important to understand what makes a market unique, such as a high degree of regulation, high competitive fragmentation, and importance of R&D.

In current thinking, there are two pillars around strategy management. Henry Mintberg also advocates a transformation of business processes, where management recognizes the need and has the ability to manage organizational business process improvement. Mintzberg proposes for an organization, bottom-ups process to drive business strategy development that hinges upon organizational configuration. In organizational configuration, the organization takes on behaviors based on adaptation to contexts.

Strategy development has evolved through 5 key stages over the years. A lot of competitive strategy is also hinged on ideas in the 1970s, where the core theme was around thinking strategically to beat competition and the business frameworks of alternative strategies, portfolio analysis, and the BCG Growth Share Matrix emerged. Shifts in strategic mindset represent an ever evolving, new business leaders, and emergence of disruptive technologies and trends. Business strategy development started with a focus on financial planning in the 1950s, moving to sustainable business planning in the 1960s, to strategic planning in the 1970s and eventually to a focus on strategic management in the present day. In the current day, the strategic development theme is on integrating strategic planning and execution with a stress on the primary notions of core competencies, strategy planning and execution, and balance scorecard analysis.

Easy Ideas For Outdoor Patio Designs | Home as Cozy Place

Article by David B Henry

Most of the time, patio styles are built around the current home and the property terrain. Attention should be directed at some other outdoor living spots surrounding the patio, and patios really should be made to function on it?s own or in conjunction with the other outdoor living areas. Utilizing different colors and patterns of patio stones or tiles will enable patio styles to be exclusive, regardless of other areas around the home or can be designed to fit within a pathway around flower beds or a swimming pool.

Considering that a patio is generally be located near the house, the patio styles ought to either supplement or contrast the current design of the home in design and colour. Most concrete patios are left in the common grey color, however artificial additives can be utilized to alter the color from the cement to practically any color preferred. Numerous various varieties for sculpting the edge and surface of fresh cement are available, to permit a sturdy concrete patio to look and feel like stones.

Numerous terrace styles incorporate concrete for a cost saving measure as individual stone patios can be expensive. Not merely is the price of the paver bricks higher as compared to concrete, but installation costs are higher. It is significantly simpler to pour a concrete floor slab and form it than it is to make the underlying gravel and sand completely to grade and install bricks.

Using Imagination With Patio Designs

It doesn?t matter what you see in building or household improvement publications, there?s no law that says patio designs have to follow the main flow of the house. They can wrap close to a house corner if more outdoor space is required and can be incorporated into a outdoor patio on another level of the home. When the ground inclines away to one side from the home, the patio may have steps leading to one more level of a decking on the portion of the home with a greater elevation.

It?s true that terrace styles are intended to be able to supply extra outside living space and also the person paying for the patio should really get to select the style. One thing to be able to bear in mind when designing and building your patio is that when the home is bought, the existing patio deck style could have a favorable impact on the buyer and become a primefeature or it might have a negative impression and they may choose to tear it out and start over.

The point is, patio styles can uniquely reflect the preferences from the home owner, and also improve the value of the home. If the homeowner is spending the time and expense of installing a patio, it may as well contribute value to the property too.

Many times a patio will make an area transitional between the home and other outdoor entertainment areas for example a pool, which provides a place for water to drip from bathing suits before they enter the house, bringing the water into the kitchen area or family room. Additional absorbent outdoor mats can also collect soil and dust from the feet to be able to prevent damage to be able to expensive floor covering.

Regardless of if the terrace is made out of decorative bricks over sand or from poured in place cement will be really reliant on preference, yet the materials as well as colors should fit into the entire landscaping theme of the home. Usually, a patio is added to the rear of the home for privacy, however designing one to the front of the home can also be special and appealing.

LSU makes case for No. 1 against WVU (AP)

No. 2 looked more like No. 1 on Saturday night.

Second-ranked LSU pulled away from No. 16 West Virginia for a 47-21 victory, the Tigers' third decisive win away from home this season.

Meanwhile, No. 1 Oklahoma fell behind early and withstood a late push from Missouri to come away with a 38-28 victory.

Ryan Broyles finished with 13 receptions for 154 yards and three touchdowns for the Sooners, who have been No. 1 since the preseason, but might be looking at relinquishing that to LSU.

The Tigers' defense allowed 463 passing to Geno Smith, but also forced four turnovers and got a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Morris Claiborne.

Oklahoma had 37 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 last week to LSU's 14.

No. 1 Oklahoma 38, Missouri 28

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? Landry Jones threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns to Ryan Broyles, leading Oklahoma back from a rare home deficit.

With two starting receivers out of the lineup, Broyles had to play up to his usual All-American standard without proven sidekicks. Kenny Stills, who caught the go-ahead touchdown in a win at then-No. 5 Florida State last week, was out with a head injury and Trey Franks is suspended indefinitely.

The Sooners roared back with 28 straight points to avenge a loss in Columbia last year when they were first in the BCS standings and move their home winning streak to 38 straight games.

The Tigers (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) pounced early to take a 14-3 first-quarter lead, breaking a streak of 20 straight home games in which Oklahoma (3-0, 1-0) never trailed.

No. 2 LSU 47, No. 16 West Virginia 21

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Jarrett Lee threw three touchdown passes, Michael Ford ran for two scores and LSU beating West Virginia.

The Tigers (4-0) converted two turnovers into scores, built a big early lead and withstood West Virginia's strong comeback for its third win over a ranked opponent this season, with all of three coming away from home. Every win so far has been by double digits.

Lee's three TD passes tied a career high and matched his output of the three previous games. He finished 16 of 28 for 180 yards.

West Virginia (3-1) outgained LSU 533-366. West Virginia's Geno Smith set school records for completions (38), attempts (65) and passing yards (463). But he was intercepted twice after making one in the previous three games.

No. 3 Alabama 38, No. 14 Arkansas 14

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) ? The Crimson Tide scored on special teams, defense and using the old-fashioned power run to emphatically win the SEC West showdown.

AJ McCarron completed 15 of 20 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a 37-yard TD pass to Michael Williams on a fake field goal for the Tide (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference).

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Kellen Moore tossed four touchdown passes, a pair to Tyler Shoemaker, in less than 2 1/2 quarters and Jerrell Givens had two interceptions for Boise State in its home opener.

The Broncos (3-0) won their 33rd consecutive regular season home game and led 27-0 at the break.

Tulsa (1-3) concluded a brutal early season stretch that featured a game at No. 1 Oklahoma and last week's wacky 59-33 loss at home to No. 7 Oklahoma State that didn't kickoff until after midnight early Sunday morning.

No. 6 Wisconsin 59, South Dakota 10

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Nick Toon had a career-high 155 yards receiving and two touchdowns in Wisconsin's final tune-up for Nebraska at Camp Randall next week.

Wisconsin (4-0) recovered from a slow start to take control of the game with a 21-point outburst in the final six minutes of the second quarter.

James White had a 49-yard touchdown run, Toon scored on a 59-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Russell Wilson and Toon added another score with 12 seconds left to send Wisconsin into halftime with a 31-3 lead.

Wilson had another big day for the Badgers, completing 19 of 25 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns before taking a seat in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Dante Warren struggled for South Dakota (2-2), a Football Championship Subdivision school. He eventually was replaced by Josh Vander Maten, who led the Coyotes to a late score.

No. 9 Nebraska 38, Wyoming 14

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) ? Rex Burkhead rushed for two touchdowns and a career-high 170 yards, Taylor Martinez threw for 157 yards and a score to lead Nebraska.

The Huskers (4-0) rolled up 490 yards total offense, including 333 on the ground, in their first road game of the season and last game before their highly anticipated Big Ten opener at Wisconsin next weekend.

Burkhead had TD runs of 45 and 16 yards. He carried the ball 15 times for an average of 11.3 yards per rush. His previous career rushing high was 129 yards against Iowa State in 2010.

No. 21 Clemson 35, No. 11 Florida State 30

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) ? Tajh Boyd threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Clemson opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with a victory.

Watkins finished with eight catches for 141 yards, his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game.

Florida State played without starting quarterback EJ Manuel, hurt in last week's 23-13 loss to top-ranked Oklahoma. Backup Clint Trickett kept the Seminoles in this, though, with 336 yards and three touchdown passes.

No. 12 South Carolina 21, Vanderbilt 3

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Marcus Lattimore scored two touchdowns and had 150 total yards from scrimmage to lead South Carolina.

The Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) won on defense, holding the Commodores (3-1, 1-1) to 77 yards.

South Carolina is 4-0 for the first time in coach Steve Spurrier's seven years with the team.

No. 13 Virginia Tech 30, Marshall 10

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) ? David Wilson rushed for 132 yards, Josh Oglesby scored two touchdowns and Virginia Tech won its final tuneup before opening Atlantic Coast Conference play against Clemson.

It was another lackluster win over an opponent from a non-BCS conference for the Hokies, who are off to their first 4-0 start since 2006.

Virginia Tech displayed some big-play ability and kept the turnover-prone Thundering Herd (1-3) in their own end for much of the game. But Marshall continued to expose Tech's vulnerabilities in the worrisome way East Carolina and Arkansas State did earlier this season.

No. 15 Florida 48, Kentucky 10

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Jeff Demps ran 10 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns as Florida beat Kentucky for the 25th straight time.

Kentucky's lone touchdown came after an interception thrown by backup Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel. Morgan Newton, who was 16-of-33 for 124 and two interceptions, threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to La'Rod King with 1:18 before halftime to cut the Gators' lead to 31-10.

No. 17 Baylor 56, Rice 31

WACO, Texas (AP) ? Robert Griffin III threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Baylor.

Griffin was 29 of 33 for 338 yards, upping his season totals to 13 touchdowns and 12 incompletions, and he didn't play in the fourth quarter. He came into the game leading the nation in passing efficiency and third in total yards.

Further boosting his Heisman Trophy credentials, Griffin ran for 51 yards and even punted once, on a quick kick, for 39 yards. His TD throws were caught by five different receivers.

Griffin led Baylor to touchdowns on five straight drives in the first half, putting the Bears (3-0) ahead 35-7.

The Owls (2-1) were coming off a win against Purdue, their first against a team from a BCS conference since 2001.

No. 18 USF 52, UTEP 24

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? B.J. Daniels threw for 202 yards and ran for 130 more for South Florida (4-0).

The junior's long TD burst was the fourth-longest in USF's relatively brief football history, and receiver Victor Marc's 67-yard scoring run later in the opening quarter was the fifth-longest.

UTEP (2-2) played without several key players sidelined with injuries, including starting quarterback Nick Lamaison, safety Travaun Nixon and defensive lineman Germard Reed.

No. 20 TCU 55, Portland State 13

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? TCU scored three touchdowns in a span of 1:18 just before halftime and Waymon James ran 65 yards for a score on the first play of the second half as the Horned Frogs won easily.

The Horned Frogs (3-1) extended a school record with their 22nd consecutive win at home. But they were still tied 3-3 with the lower-division FCS team until finally busting loose just before halftime.

Casey Pachall threw a short pass to Josh Boyce, who turned upfield to find a wide-open lane for a 66-yard touchdown with 1:55 left.

Portland State (1-2) took only one snap after that before Tank Carder's 26-yard interception return for a TD. After the Vikings went three-and-out on their next possession, Skye Dawson followed his 42-yard punt return with a 10-yard TD catch for a 24-3 halftime lead.

James also had an 82-yard kickoff return for a score.

No. 22 Michigan 28, San Diego State 7

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) ? Denard Robinson ran for a season-high 200 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wolverines past Michigan coach Brady Hoke's former team.

Robinson ran 21 times and reached 200 yards rushing for the third time in his career for Michigan (4-0). He matched his career high with three rushing scores and did it in one half for the first time.

San Diego State (3-1) had won its first three games for the first time since 1981, Ryan Lindley and the offense started slowly against Michigan. Lindley completed 23 of 48 passes for 253 yards and a TD. Ronnie Hillman ran for 109 yards on 21 carries.

No. 24 Illinois 23, Western Michigan 20

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) ? Troy Pollard ran for a career-high 133 yards and Derek Dimke kicked three field goals as Illinois survived.

The Illini trailed at the half 13-10 and the game was tied 20-20 with less than nine minutes to play. Booing Illini fans recalled a 23-17 loss to the Broncos (2-2) the last time the teams met in 2008.

Pollard's 49-yard burst midway through the fourth quarter set up a 21-yard Dimke field goal that gave the Illini (4-0) the three-point lead they wouldn't give up.

Alex Carder was 30 of 48 with two touchdowns, 306 yards and one interception. His second-quarter scoring pass to Chleb Ravenell gave the Broncos their halftime lead. Jordan White caught 14 passes for 132 yards and a third-quarter touchdown that tied the game at 20.

No. 25 Georgia Tech 35, North Carolina 28

ATLANTA (AP) ? Tevin Washington threw a long touchdown pass and ran for two scores, including a 5-yarder that gave Georgia Tech a 4-0 start.

The Tar Heels (3-1, 1-1 ACC) fought back from a 28-14 deficit, tying the game on freshman Giovani Bernard's 55-yard run with 7:22 left. Georgia Tech (4-0, 1-0) needed only four plays to respond.

Roddy Jones reached out to take a pitch from Washington that looked too far in front of the running back, going 48 yards down the sideline to the North Carolina 9. Two snaps later, Washington took it in for the winning score with 5:20 left.

Stephen Hill had a huge game for Georgia Tech with six receptions for 151 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown. Bernard rushed for 155 yards and two TDs.

The Badminton Herald: Using game psychology in badminton

; We all know how superb athletes "psych up" before and during their games that most of us wonder will it work for an ordinary athlete like me?We've seen it in any type of sport, group or individual alike. We've seen sheer determination fuel an amazing game comebacks in tennis, basketball or in every sport. But in our daily games of badminton? Will we be able to study game psychology and use it? More importantly, how can psyching up be applied to your daily game plans.

I have seen many badminton players win games just by looking at their game psychology strategy. This is specially true with opposing players who are both equally effective in their badminton fitness and skills. The strategy is always to outwit the opponents, not by skills alone but by providing an environment of an overwhelming presence and superiority.?

Personally, a strong offensive play with smashes and net attacks put opponents on the defensive. The other strategy is to direct shots at your opponents weakest or in doubles, the perceived weak partner. Tight body shots also shakes one psyche. Power smashes directed onto your opponents body are psyche shattering and emotion awakening to the opponents thus destroying a stable game plan.

However, "psyching up" for a game had to requisites: One is that you're in tip top shape and second, you have very good focus and composure. Or your game psyching will go against you. That needs no explanation.

What about you guys?Do you use some form of game psychology in your everyday games?Leave your comments here.

Romney questions Perry's stance on Social Security (AP)

MIAMI ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Wednesday questioned how Rick Perry would fix Social Security as the focus of the GOP presidential race turns to senior citizen-rich Florida this week.

In a likely preview of a Thursday debate in Orlando, Romney took issue with Perry's contention in a recently published book that each of the 50 states would better handle the huge federal program.

"In my opinion, this does not work in any way, shape or form," Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said at a town hall meeting attended by about 75 people." Romney also asserted that Perry called Social Security "unconstitutional" and added: "I believe it is constitutional. I think that's proven and settled."

While Perry indeed roundly criticized Social Security in his book, he didn't use the word unconstitutional. Rather, Perry branded the program the "best example" of the "fraud" and "bad disease" spread by Washington in Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Perry furthermore criticized the Supreme Court of that era for "abdicating its role as the protector of constitutional federalism."

Romney's criticism marks the start of an important three-day stretch for the GOP presidential field in the perennial battleground state of Florida. There's Thursday's debate, with events sponsored by the social conservative group Faith and Freedom Coalition stretching into Friday and a nonbinding test vote of party faithful on Saturday.

Perry, the Texas governor and current GOP front-runner in recent national polls, was also in Florida on Wednesday at a pair of private fundraisers, one in Fort Lauderdale and one in Palm Beach County.

While Perry made clear in his book what he thinks about Social Security, he hasn't provided specifics about what he would do if elected president to the program that millions of senior citizens depend on.

When asked in a recent interview with Time magazine how he would change Social Security, Perry said many ideas should be on the table. "The idea that we're going to write a Social Security reform plan today is a bit of a stretch from my perspective," he said.

Romney pressed that issue at his event early Wednesday.

Two large screens displayed questions about Perry's position on Social Security, such as what would happen if some states chose not to have any such system, and whether people would have to switch plans if they moved from state to state.

"There are a lot of questions I'd like to have answered to understand the nature of that plan," Romney said.

Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan accused Romney of "sounding like a Democrat, distorting the truth and trying to scare senior citizens."

"Gov. Perry has been clear that he will protect benefits for those at and nearing retirement and work with citizens, experts and elected leaders to fix Social Security financing for future generations," Sullivan said in an e-mail statement.

Romney said he, too, would propose financial fixes for Social Security, most likely a slight increase in the retirement age for younger workers and a decrease in the plan's growth rate for higher-income retirees.

"It can't keep going forever the way it is," Romney said.

(AP) ? Bahraini police set up checkpoints and patrolled key roads Saturday in a massive show of force during highly charged parliamentary elections that Shiite-led opposition groups have vowed to boycott.

The heaviest security was around Pearl Square in the capital Manama, which was once the hub for Shiite protesters demanding greater rights from the ruling Sunny monarchy. The area was ringed by barb wire and lines of armored police vehicles amid calls by anti-government factions to try to reclaim control of the site.

The special elections were called to fill 18 parliament seats abandoned by Shiite lawmakers to protest the harsh crackdowns since February in the strategic nation, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

More than 30 people have died in the unrest and hundreds have been arrested, including activists sentenced to life in prison after being charged with plotting to overthrow the ruling system.

Main Shiite factions have vowed to snub the voting in a message of defiance. On Friday, scattered clashes broke out in mainly Shiite areas and Bahrain's most senior Shiite cleric, Sheik Isa Qassim, denounced the government as leading a "fake democracy."

Shiites are the majority in Bahrain, but claim they face widespread discrimination and are blocked from high-level military or political posts. Among the demands is a European-style system for an elected government, including the prime minister.

Bahrain's parliament has little direct powers, but it carries important symbolism as part of limited political reforms started about a decade ago. The expected boycott is almost certain to leave the parliament totally in pro-government hands and deepen the country's rifts. Four of the candidates have already been declared winners by running unopposed or after rivals dropped out.

Bahrain's leaders, meanwhile, have backing from powerful Gulf neighbors that fear any cracks among the region's ruling kings and sheiks. A Gulf force, led by Saudi Arabia, was dispatched to Bahrain in March to help prop up the 200-year-old Sunni dynasty.

But the protests across the region have stirred some small steps toward more political openness.

The United Arab Emirates also holds elections Saturday for seats on a national advisory council, which has no legislative powers but is promoted by Emirati officials as part of a widening "experiment" in allowing a greater public voice in affairs. The UAE's elections will be decided by about 129,000 hand-picked voters.

Later this month, Saudi Arabia plans to hold municipal elections after a nearly two-year delay. Woman, however, will be still barred from participating or voting.
