Outsourcing Opens the Door to Growth | Entrepreneur Magazine

SA companies are well in line with global trends when it comes to adopting shared services and outsourcing strategies for IT, realising that in-house is not always the way to go.

That?s according to KPMG?s recently launched South African 2012 Pulse Survey for shared services and outsourcing.

The South African survey was launched to provide insights into trends and projections in local end-user organisations? usage of shared services, outsourcing, and third-party business and IT services and compare these to global trends.

Increased exposure to change, rapid technological advancements and an increasingly complex global market has made shared services and outsourcing a strategic imperative for businesses around the world.

?Over the last decade, several businesses have openly embraced transformation programmes, effectively leveraging global delivery platforms,? says Alida Taylor, director of Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Practice at KPMG SA. ?As part of this study, KPMG sought to understand the extent to which such strategies are being adopted in South Africa.?

Key drivers consistent locally and internationally

The survey revealed that some of the key drivers for improving service delivery capabilities are consistent globally and in South Africa with an aim to reduce costs and support growth and expansion agendas.

?We find this increasingly applicable, as clients look to build capability hubs to support their expansion plans in the larger African continent,? said Vandana Ramani , associate director, Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Practice at KPMG SA.

SA companies still use in-house resources

Results reveal that South Africa does show a divergence when compared to global results in terms of its propensity to outsource, choosing to seed several of these initiatives in-house first.

However, the survey?s forward-looking trends show that the top three areas of demand for outsourced services are in the areas of:

  • information technology,
  • bundled business and IT services,
  • and vertical specific services.

?Service providers are bullish regarding the South African market in the longer-term,? says Taylor, ?both as users of third-party services and as a location from which to deliver services to other markets.?

Sectors showing potential going forward

  • Banking and financial services
  • Energy and utilities
  • Oil and gas and manufacturing

Challenges faced

The survey also looked at some of the challenges associated with such transformation programmes. The South African market respondents agreed that change management capabilities and the ability to prioritise change programmes are clearly the biggest challenges in the local market.

Organisations are also faced with several compliance and regulatory restrictions, which in turn require careful planning when embarking on such programmes.

?Although challenges exist,? Taylor concludes, ?the convergence of many of these trends leaves us optimistic about the future of shared services and outsourcing in the South African industry landscape.?

The Home I Am Renting Is In Foreclosure, What Should I Do ...

questions

Q: I found out the home I?m renting is in preforeclosure. I have children and gave a large deposit. If I move should I expect the deposit back so I can put it toward another place? Where do I look for help?
?Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA

A: You should seek the help of your local attorney to see what your options are but reality may be that the landlord does not have the funds to reimburse your deposit. States have different laws on deposits so check with the attorney to find out the law in CA. If they have to hold it in escrow then it may still be available to you. I would suggest that in a future rental unless it is being managed by a big firm with a great history and track record to add language that the mortgage is verified quarterly as being up to date by the tenant to avoid paying rent while a landlord lets the home be foreclosed.
Mike Grumbles is a Realtor? with Exit Realty of the South in Franklin, TN.

A: Dear LA-
Some Foreclosure processes have a procedure known as ?Cash for Keys? that help the unsuspecting Lessee recover from upfront deposits lost when a lease agreement is disrupted prematurely by foreclsoure proceedings.

I suggest you take the route of preparing to move to save yourself the hassle of short notice.

Should the knock at your door come before you are ready to move, ask the bank what they plan to do to aid you with financial recovery.

Good luck!

Eliminating Invasive Cervical Cancer Possible, Moffitt Cancer Center ...

? Cervical Cancer news ? Sep 27, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and The Ohio State University have published a paper in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention that provides an overview on preventing invasive cervical cancer.

?The good news is that over the past several decades, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined dramatically,? said senior author Anna R. Giuliano, Ph.D., director of Moffitt?s Center for Infection Research in Cancer and senior member of the Cancer Epidemiology Department. ?The bad news is that 60 percent of invasive cervical cancers occur in women who are members of underserved racial or ethnic minorities, in women residing in rural areas or living in poverty.?

The incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined 75 percent since the 1940s. According to the authors, rates have decreased from 14.8 per 100,000 women in 1975 to 6.6 per 100,000 in 2008. Credit for the decline is given to the more widespread use of the Pap smear.

The number of current cases of invasive cervical cancer varies by race and ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status. For Hispanics, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer is 10.4 per 100,000, higher than any other group. Among blacks 85 and older, the incidence is three times higher than white women in the same age group.

?In looking across the nation, there are geographic and socioeconomic disparities associated with invasive cervical cancer rates,? noted lead author Christine M. Pierce Campbell, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow within Moffitt?s Cancer Epidemiology Department. ?Along the U.S.-Mexico border, in the deep South and in Appalachia, rates are higher than in other regions of the nation. Also, many studies have shown that socioeconomic status predicts who gets screened, diagnosed and treated for invasive cervical cancer, regardless of race and ethnicity.?

Giuliano, Pierce Campbell and their co-authors also note that federal and local funding of prevention programs, such as the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the only nationwide screening program, has helped reduce incidence. Although the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program was implemented to promote screening among high-risk and low-income women, the program has historically served few of the women eligible for the service. The numbers of those taking advantage of the service vary by state, but between 2004 and 2006, only 8.7 percent of women eligible for screening received it, the authors said.

Important Facts About Cervical Cancer
? Cervical cancer can usually be prevented if women are screened regularly with a test called the Pap test.
? It is estimated that during 2003, about 12,200 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,100 women will die of the disease.
? Any woman who has a cervix can get cervical cancer, especially if she or her sexual partner has had sex with several other partners.
? Most often, cervical cancer develops in women aged 40 or older.
? Abnormal cells in the cervix and cervical cancer don?t always cause symptoms, especially at first. That?s why getting tested for cervical cancer is important, even if there are no symptoms.
? When it is found early and treated, cervical cancer is highly curable.
? Most deaths from cervical cancer could be avoided if women had regular checkups with the Pap test.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, now in two forms, could also reduce incidence, the authors said. GARDASIL, the first HPV vaccine targeting females ages 9 to 26 to prevent invasive cervical cancer, was released in 2006. It was followed by the CERVARIX vaccine, which is targeted to females 10 to 25.

However, HPV vaccine use lags behind other adolescent vaccines, Giuliano said.

?Barriers to HPV vaccination include costs, perceived safety issues, and the perception that vaccination is unnecessary if the woman or child is not sexually active,? Pierce Campbell said. ?Parental knowledge, attitudes and beliefs influence utilization, as well. Physician recommendation of the HPV vaccine is a key factor to its use, yet many primary care physicians have not been proactive in promoting it, especially to young adolescents in the target age groups.?

The most important thing you can do to avoid getting cervical cancer is to have regular Pap tests.

What is the Pap Test?
The Pap test, also called the Pap smear, is a cervical cancer screening test. It is not used to detect other kinds of cancer. It is done in a doctor?s office or a clinic. This test can find abnormal cells in the cervix that may turn into cancer if they?re not treated.

During the test, the doctor or nurse uses a plastic or metal instrument, called a speculum, to widen the vagina. This helps the doctor or nurse examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it. These cells are placed on a slide and sent to a laboratory to be checked for abnormal cells.

The doctor or nurse also performs a pelvic exam, checking the uterus, ovaries and other organs to make sure there are no problems. There are times when a doctor may perform a pelvic exam without giving you a Pap test. Ask your doctor or nurse which tests you?re having, if you?re unsure.

Who Does Not Need to be Tested?
The only women who do not need regular Pap tests are:

? Those over age 65 who have had regular Pap
tests with normal results and have been told
by their doctors that they don?t need to be
tested anymore.

? Women who do not have a cervix. This
includes women whose cervix was removed as
part of an operation to remove the uterus.
(The surgery is called a hysterectomy.)

However, a small number of women who
have had this operation still have a cervix and
should continue having regular Pap tests. If
you?re not sure whether you have a cervix,
speak to your doctor about it.

Because HPV infection in men contributes to HPV infection in women and the subsequent development of invasive cervical cancer, an additional strategy to reduce incidence has been the HPV vaccination of males, the authors said.

?Gender-neutral HPV vaccination would result in maximal disease reduction,? they wrote. ?Universal HPV vaccination has the potential to reduce the incidence of invasive cervical cancer and its precancerous lesions by 91 percent.?

Five Keys to Self-Managing our Emotional Intelligence

Property management at the very least can be described as chaotic at times. There are so many variables each and every day that can challenge our ability to accomplish our list of duties. How many times does the phone interrupt us? How many maintenance ?emergencies? arise? Yes the list can be quite extensive. When we feel like we are losing some control our emotions can get the better of us. Here are five keys to improving our own self-management.

Be Consistent

Part of self-management is the ability to be stable. The values you hold dear should always be apparent. Always changing to the whim 86520564 200x300 Five Keys to Self Managing our Emotional Intelligenceof your peers or customers can not only cause others to question your beliefs. With consistency comes stability. Stability breeds trust. Consistency certainly aids productivity for you and your team. ?Maintaining consistency puts you on the right path towards emotional intelligence.

Stick to the Plan

If you are responsible for particular tasks, do them. Don?t just do them, but make sure they are done to the best of your ability and in a timely manner. It is easy to feel out of control when you disregard the plan you are to follow. Do you have your plan in writing? Having it in writing has a couple of benefits. It gives you a great visual aid of the project outline and it also allows you to check items off as they have been completed.

Be Accountable

There are times when things don?t work out as you plan, but you have to be able to admit that and then use your flexibility to get things back on track. The ideal result is that you easily bounce back and complete the task, but even during those times when this is not the case, you must adjust. We need to realize that we simply are not perfect. Mistakes do happen. Keeping this in mind allows us to have a true awareness of ourselves and that will help us react accordingly when things go wrong.

Educate Yourself

We live in an ever-changing world and you want to be able to keep up with it. Don?t let change pass you by; embrace it. Be an avid reader. Talk and listen to mentors and peers. They may know something that could help you along your journey. Whether it?s on a tablet or a good old paperback, reading is so critical in this fast paced world. Do you have a set amount of time scheduled for reading and research each week? ?How about reading something on emotional intelligence, marketing, leadership, or self improvement.

Stay Physically Fit

Many people don?t think of staying fit when they talk about self-management, but it is very important. Exercising your body is just as crucial to self-management as exercising your mind. A body that is not well rested, nutritionally fed or physically exercised can lead to emotional and physical illnesses. A well exercised body also facilitates a clearer mind which in turn leads to better time management and decisions.

Emotional intelligence is a very deep subject. The principles are sound but will always apply uniquely to each and every one of us. Part of emotional intelligence is self-management. When we recognize this need from a professional and personal level we can achieve a greater degree of success in our everyday lives. If you have any thoughts or contributions please feel free to share them in the comment section below.

Reese Witherspoon Welcomes Baby Boy

Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth welcomed a baby boy earlier today.? Tennessee James Toth, what an awesome name, is the newest addition to the Witherspoon/Toth clan and his parents have been anxiously awaiting his arrival. Although the actress never confirmed her pregnancy it became quite obvious?a few months ago that she was indeed expanding her family. Today Reese and Jim became the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy.?He is named after the state where his mother grew up and his father, both of which make up a pretty stellar name in my book. A rep for Reese released this statement earlier. “Reese Witherspoonand husband Jim Toth welcomed Tennessee James into their family today. Both mom and baby are healthy and the entire family is thrilled.? Having more children is something that Reese has wanted to do since she married her hubby. This is a dream come true fro both of them. Little Tennessee is the first child for Witherspoon and Toth. As I am sure you all know she has two kids Ava, 13 and Deacon, 8 with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. As I said above the actress spoke very little about her third pregnancy. It was [...]

Total Recall: Bruce Willis' Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Looper star.

Bruce Willis

He's been a television star, recording artist, wine cooler pitchman, and Idaho real estate tycoon, but Bruce Willis is best known for his films -- and his latest, this weekend's Looper, looks to be one of the most critically renowned of the year. Not too shabby for a guy who's been cranking out movies for 25 years -- and whose filmography includes some of the most beloved hits of the last quarter century. In honor of this latest achievement, we decided now would be the perfect time to take another fond look back at some of Mr. Willis' brightest critical highlights, and you know what that means... yippee-ki-yay, it's time for Total Recall!

75%

Willis might be most famous for his smirk, but he's made pretty good use of his voice, too -- scoring a Top Five hit single with "Respect Yourself," lending his pipes to the Look Who's Talking Movies, and entering the vocal booth for projects as varied as the Apocalypse video game and the Bruno the Kid cartoon series. Oh, and there's also Over the Hedge, 2006's star-studded adaptation of the syndicated comic strip about a crafty raccoon (Willis) who helps a group of woodland critters (voiced by Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner, among others) cope with their habitat being encroached upon by a suburban neighborhood. "Over the Hedge may be 'just' a cartoon," admitted Roger Moore for the Orlando Sentinel. "But it's also a biting and funny jab at SUV-MSG Nation."

76%

Willis' first few films offered viewers variations on David Addison, the fast-talking P.I. he played on Moonlighting, but in 1989, director Norman Jewison offered him his first major shot at a solidly dramatic role -- and he delivered, disappearing behind mammoth facial hair to play a haunted Vietnam vet whose young niece (Emily Lloyd) tries to draw him out of his shell in order to learn more about the father she lost in the war. "The movie is like a time bomb," argued Roger Ebert. "You sit there, interested, absorbed, sometimes amused, sometimes moved, but wondering in the back of your mind what all of this is going to add up to. Then you find out."

78%

A blackly cartoonish noir whose garish violence seeps into every millimeter of the frame, Sin City united a stellar ensemble cast (including Willis, Mickey Rourke, Elijah Wood, Clive Owen, and Benicio del Toro) on a journey into blight, corruption, betrayal, and death. Not exactly cheerful stuff, in other words, and plenty of viewers took issue with what they saw as the movie's misogynistic overtones -- but for fans of the genre, Sin City provided one of the most hard-hitting and skillfully crafted entries in years. "It's a hard, viciously funny little movie, one with all the subtlety of a billy club," admitted Salon's Stephanie Zacharek. "But there's artistry here, too."

81%

For awhile, it looked like 1995's Die Hard with a Vengeance would be the last time audiences got to see Willis saving the day as Detective John McClane -- but the lure of the beloved franchise (and its attendant paycheck) eventually proved too strong to resist, and in 2007, he finally returned with Live Free or Die Hard. Swapping out the earlier films' Everyman conceit for a tongue-in-cheek humor that wholeheartedly embraced the silliness inherent in the series, Live Free amped up the action to such a ridiculous extent that it might as well have been a non-Die Hard movie -- but the result was still entertaining enough to satisfy critics like Jonathan F. Richards of Film.com, who wrote, "Movie characters like McClane are the Paul Bunyans and John Henrys and Pecos Bills of our age, the stuff of tall tales spun with the technology of an age whose campfires are found in multiplexes with stadium seating."

85%

As the 1990s wore on, Willis tended to gravitate toward quiet dramatic roles that sublimated his famous smirking charisma -- a trend that reached its commercial apex with The Sixth Sense, the supernatural thriller that introduced writer/director M. Night Shyamalan to the world, turned Donnie Wahlberg into a character actor, and doomed Haley Joel Osment to a life of hearing people whisper "I see dead people" whenever he walked into a room. Some of its luster has been lost thanks to Shyamalan's downward career spiral, but Sense was one of the biggest movies of 1999, and for some very good reasons -- not the least of which was a Willis performance that helped inspired the San Jose Mercury News' Charlie McCollum to call the film "An intense, haunting, often beautifully crafted character study and meditation on the nature of death and life after death."

Noteshelf (for iPad)

If you're going to use an iPad for work or school, you need a note-taking app (or two) that meet your needs and that you enjoy using. If you find an app that offers all the bells and whistles you think you need, but you dread launching the darn thing, you won't use it. The iPad app Noteshelf ($5.99) gets more than halfway there on both accounts, but doesn't quite follow through and deliver everything an avid note taker might need, nor deliver it in a package that you'd necessarily want to look at day in and day out.

Signature Features
Noteshelf offers three signature features. First, it organizes notes into visual notebooks, which sit on a shelf that looks stunningly similar to Apple's iBooks app. If you like the idea of seeing your notes in a book, which you can title and design, this feature may help you keep track of your notes. It's really a more of a design trick than anything else, seeing as most note-taking apps give you some kind of mechanism for sorting or organizing notes?it's just that they're not always visual.

Second, Noteshelf supports not only handwriting and sketching, but also typed text, which not all note-taking apps do.

Third, this note-taking app has a well designed zoom tool, which serious note-takers know is a necessity for handwritten and sketched notes on the iPad. Touch-screen writing tends to get sloppy without it.

While these three signature features do create a decent foundation for Noteshelf, none of them are unique. For example, Penultimate uses the same visual notebook method of organization as Noteshelf, but costs one-sixth of the price. Penultimate, however, was specifically designed to handle handwriting and sketching and does not even include a keyboard in the app. Our favorite iPad note-taking app overall has been Note Taker HD? (4.5 stars and an Editors' Choice), and it allows for both typed text and sketching or handwritten text. It also has a zoom mode, and one that's just as good if not better than Noteshelf's. Note Taker HD comes with a few advantages over Noteshelf, too, which I'll explain in a moment.

Noteshelf's Shortcomings
With its signature features, Noteshelf seems like a capable enough note-taking application, but when I got down to actually using it, I found it to be missing a few critical components.

Like any well-rounded note-taking app, Noteshelf lets you import images, which you can paste into a note and mark up. Unfortunately, once you affix an image to a note, you can't select it to move it or crop it. The app doesn't have a pan tool at all (in the slideshow images, you may notice a hand icon, which is in fact a wrist protection feature and not the panning button it appears to be).

Without a pan tool or selection tool of some kind, it's next to impossible to move anything around the note page. Say you import an image, then mark it up with pen notes and highlighter marks. Now perhaps you'll add a text box to type a label for the image or additional notes about it. The note may start to get cluttered, and if you could only just shift some of the page elements a few inches this way or that, you could probably fit everything you want on the page. But in Noteshelf, you can't easily drag page elements to a new place.

I hinted earlier that Note Taker HD has a few advantages over Noteshelf, and the ability to more easily manipulate (crop, move) PDFs and images that you import is one. Another is support for left-handed people.

While I don't want to have unrealistic expectations for an iPad app, I did notice that Noteshelf flattens your notes immediately?meaning if you import an image, mark it up, and then go to erase one of your marks, you'll also be erasing the image that's beneath the marks. I really wouldn't expect to see layering enabled on a simple mobile note-taking app, and Noteshelf actually does get around this problem by supporting multiple undos. So you can erase or you can hit undo.

Penultimate, you'll remember, does not have any typed text support whatsoever, but one thing it has that Noteshelf doesn't is a "clear page" button. In Noteshelf, if you want o clear a note page entirely, you'll have to select the eraser button and rub the entire screen (or hit undo as many times as it takes).

Which App to Choose?
If your notes will include a mix of typed text and handwritten or sketched notes, I'd recommend Note Taker HD over Noteshelf. It costs a dollar less and has more. If you don't need to include typed notes, I would suggest going with the 99-cent app Penultimate.

Mortgage rates fall to a record-low 3.49 percent

By MARCY GORDON, Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The average U.S. rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage touched its record low this week and the rate on 15-year mortgage hit a new record.

The declines followed the Federal Reserve announcement last week that it would buy bonds to try to push mortgage rates lower and stimulate the housing market.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the average rate on the 30-year loan declined to 3.49 percent from 3.55 percent last week. That matched the lowest rate since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.

The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage, a popular refinancing option, plunged to 2.77 percent, a new record. That's down from 2.85 percent last week and the previous record low of 2.80 percent.

Cheap mortgages have helped drive a modest housing recovery this year. And the Fed wants to keep those rates low for the foreseeable future as a way to stimulate the economy.

Last week the Fed said it plans to spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage bonds for as long as it thinks necessary to make home buying more affordable.

Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo, said the stimulus likely helped lower mortgage rates this week. And the Fed's bond purchases will probably push rates down even further over the next six to nine months, Vitner suggested.

"Mortgage rates are going to be lower than they would otherwise," he said. "Housing looks like it's going to provide a significant lift to the economy over the next year."

The market is already benefiting from the lowest rates on record.

Sales of both previously occupied and newly built homes are up from last year. Home prices are rising more consistently. And builders are more confident in the market and are starting to build more homes.

The broader economy is also likely to benefit from a revival in the housing market. When home prices rise, Americans typically feel wealthier and spend more ? a point made by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke when he addressed the new stimulus measures last week.

Still, the housing market has a long way back. Sales and construction rates remain below healthy levels.

And some economists question whether lower rates will make much of a difference. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage has been below 4 percent since early December. So most people who can qualify have likely already taken advantage of the lower rates.

Many people who would like to refinance or buy a home can't because they fail to meet stricter lending requirements or don't have enough money to make a down payment.

To calculate average rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country on Monday through Wednesday of each week.

The average does not include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for 30-year loans was 0.6 point, unchanged from last week. The fee for 15-year loans also held steady at 0.6 point.

The average rate on one-year adjustable-rate mortgages was unchanged at 2.61 percent. The fee for one-year adjustable rate loans was steady at 0.4 point.

The average rate on five-year adjustable-rate mortgages rose to 2.76 percent from 2.72 percent. The fee was unchanged at 0.6 point.?

New gene offers hope for preventive medicine against fractures

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? A big international study has identified a special gene that regulates bone density and bone strength. The gene can be used as a risk marker for fractures and opens up opportunities for preventive medicine against fractures. The study, led by the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was published in the journal PLoS Genetics.

The international study, which involved more than 50 researchers from Europe, North America and Australia and was led by Associate Professor Mattias Lorentzon and Professor Claes Ohlsson at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, is based on extensive genetic analyses of the genetic material of 10,000 patients and experimental studies in mice.

Through the combined studies, researchers have succeeded in identifying a special gene, Wnt16, with a strong link to bone density and so-called cortical bone thickness, which is decisive to bone strength.

The genetic variation studied by the international research network could predict, for example, the risk of a forearm fracture in a large patient group of older women.

"In the experimental study, we could then establish that the gene had a crucial effect on the thickness and density of the femur. In mice without the Wnt16 gene, the strength of the femur was up to 61 per cent lower," according to Mattias Lorentzon at the Institute of Medicine, the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

The discovery opens up opportunities to develop new medicines to prevent the most common fractures.

"Low cortical bone mass is a decisive factor in, for example, hip and forearm fractures. Unfortunately, the treatments currently used for brittleness of the bones have very little effect on the cortical bone mass," says Mattias Lorentzon.

"If we can learn to stimulate the signaling routes of the Wnt16 gene, we could strengthen the skeleton in these parts too, thereby preventing the most common and serious fractures. The discovery of Wnt16 and its regulation of cortical bone mass is therefore very important," according to Mattias Lorentzon.

ritualism skippy: News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: The ...

Well, we are constantly being told by global warming alarmists that mankind's output of CO2 is causing ambient atmospheric temperatures to rise on the surface of our planet causing irreversible and irreconcilable challenges of a future climate cliff. Whereas AGW theory, and it is a theory, sounds at least remotely plausible it turns out that there is quite a bit of data to the contrary and I'd like to give you just one example if I might.

There was a recent study put out which showed that US carbon emissions output is the lowest in over 20 years. Alternative Energy need not take a victory lap, nor should the global warming alarmist carbon trading folks take credit for this because if there is less CO2 it is because we are using less coal to generate electricity as we are using more natural gas because it is cheaper. Natural gas also puts out far less greenhouse emissions. Why do we have so much natural gas and why is it cheaper you ask?

Well, it is cheaper because of supply and demand, and the supply has grown astronomically due to new fracking techniques which is an innovation which happened in the fossil fuel industry. It was not funded by the Department of Energy, nor did it have anything whatsoever to do with the global warming alarmists, or the environmentalists. It was a solution which was achieved by free-market capitalism without any intervention from the government. In fact the government did everything it could to prevent unlocking this huge resource of natural gas.

In other words everything that the government has done to try to solve the global warming problem, which really isn't a problem at all because a 1 to 2 degree Fahrenheit increase in the ambient temperature is well within the normal climate cycles of planet Earth, if not within the probability of error (margin of error) in the actual readings over the last 150 years. We've spent an ungodly amount of money propping up alternative energy to no avail.

The reason there is less CO2 in the atmosphere is due to our switch to natural gas, not due to more solar panels or wind farms, as they couldn't possibly have had that large of an effect because they only produce about 1 to 2% of our total energy usage in the United States. Maybe it's time that we got a real energy policy based on real science and not fabricated data from global warming alarmists, most of which started out of Europe and the co-conspirators would love to see our US industrial base move to their shores. It's time to stop playing games and pretending, it is time to make policy based on the reality.

This is something that free-market capitalism is very good at as we've been able to solve almost every problem from feeding starving Africans to creating the greatest nation on earth with the most abundance. Maybe it's time we tell the environmental socialists; "thank you very much for your time, but you're no longer needed in our policymaking decisions." Please consider all this and think on it.

500 jobs lost from county as Unilever shuts Ewloe IT base

UNILEVER is to quit? its plush office complex in Flintshire, axeing up to 100 jobs.

The consumer goods giant will shut down its IT headquarters in Ewloe in early 2014.

Up to 100 employees at the St David?s Park office could be made redundant.

The remaining 400 staff will be moved to a hub in Port Sunlight, Wirral.

Yesterday?s announcement confirmed proposals unveiled in June to invest ?40 million at Port Sunlight and to close four UK plants.

Unilever?s human resources director Tim Munden said: ?There are currently in the region of 500 people at our Ewloe office. Redundancies could affect in the region of 100 people.

That is the information I have but we still need to confirm it.?

He added: ?Of the 100 potential job losses these are a mixture of employees and contractors. I think about half and half.?

Talking of the staff relocations he said: ?The offices are 15 miles apart and many of the people who work in Ewloe used to work in Port Sunlight anyway.?

He said Unilever was in talks with its IT centre in Bangalore, India, over potential outsourcing of jobs from Ewloe.

Meanwhile, Unilever will sign a distribution contract with Deeside company Great Bear, which will create 50 new jobs.

The three other sites to go are in Swansea, Bridgend and Slough, where a total of 500 jobs face the axe.

The investment in the new manufacturing and IT hub at Port Sunlight will create 150 new jobs.

Chairman of Unilever UK and Ireland, Amanda Sourry, said: ?Following an extensive review, we have decided to move forward with proposals outlined in June.

?The investment into Port Sunlight will play a significant role in helping to maintain and sustain our current success and competitiveness both in the UK and on a global scale.

?We understand that many of our employees will be anxious at this time.

?That?s why we are pledging a good package of support for employees who are adversely affected.

?We will consult fully on these measures, and are committed to conducting a sensitive and thorough consultation and helping our employees to understand their options for the future.?

A 90-day consultation with all affected employees will begin on Monday.

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami MP said: ?I am clearly disappointed that Unilever has decided to proceed with its reorganisation which will lead to the closure of the Ewloe site.

?I am reassured to some extent that a large number of those employees will transfer to Port Sunlight but jobs will still be lost with work going to India. The company?s commitment to open a distribution depot in Deeside is positive news and will create employment but does not offset the loss of the Ewloe site. I am in regular contact with the company to explore all options for the staff affected.?

Secretary of State for Wales David Jones said: "I understand a comprehensive package of support will be offered to those who may be affected by the redundancies, including opportunities for some employees to relocate to Port Sunlight.

?The news that around 50 new jobs will be created at Unilever's distribution centre in Deeside will also create more local opportunities in North Wales.?

Unite Wales secretary Andy Richards said: ?This news from Unilever unfortunately does not come as a surprise today but it is still disappointing and distressing for our members and other workers at the sites.

?Needless to say, any move that takes jobs and investment out of Wales is not good news, especially in the current economic climate.

?The priority now must be to ensure the best possible deal and future for those affected by today?s announcement.?

How many plants can be found in the Alps that are not native to that region? Which animals were deliberately or accidently introduced to the Danube? How big a threat will they become to local wildlife? EASIN, the European Alien Species Information Network, launched today by the European Commission's in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), takes a first step towards answering these and other questions related to 16 000 alien species currently reported all over Europe. This information network the first of its kind in Europe is an important step to deal with the threat of alien species that become invasive. Invasive species present a serious threat to biodiversity and natural resources, with an economic impact estimated at around 12 billion per year.

Environment Commissioner Janez Poto?nik said: "Invasive alien species are causing growing problems for our natural resources, people's health and the economy. This threat arises from non-native species whose numbers are growing rapidly in an increasingly interconnected world. The EASIN network will help people in Europe get better information about where non-native species are, and how common they are and that will support better policy making on this difficult issue."

Alien species non-native organisms that become established in a new environment are on the increase worldwide. Most of them do not present significant risks for their new environment. However, some of them adapt so successfully to the new environment that they become invasive from being biological curiosities they become genuine threats to local ecosystems, crops and livestock, threatening our environmental and social wellbeing. Invasive alien species are the second leading cause of biodiversity loss, after habitat alteration.

EASIN facilitates the mapping and classification of alien species by indexing reported data from over 40 online databases. Through dynamically updated web features, users can view and map the distribution of alien species in Europe and select them using criteria ranging from the environment in which they are found (terrestrial, marine or fresh water) and their biological classification through to the pathways of their introduction.

At the heart of EASIN is a catalogue that currently contains over 16 000 species. This inventory of all reported alien species in Europe was produced by compiling, checking and standardising the information available online and in scientific literature. Users of EASIN can explore and map geo-referenced information on alien species from the following online databases: the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the Global Invasive Species Information Network (GISIN) and the Regional Euro-Asian Biological Invasions Centre (REABIC). Further data providers will be included over the coming years. The EASIN web tools and services follow internationally recognised standards and protocols. They are free for use, while the data ownership remains with the source, which is properly cited and linked to in EASIN.

Next Steps

Combating invasive alien species is one of the six key objectives of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy, and the Commission is preparing specific proposals for strengthening legislation in this area.

Background

Alien species are present in almost every ecosystem type on Earth. In some cases they have become invasive, affecting native biota. They belong to all major taxonomic groups, including viruses, fungi, algae, mosses, ferns, higher plants, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Invasive alien species can transform the structure and species composition of ecosystems by repressing or excluding native species, either directly by predation or competing with them for resources or indirectly by modifying habitats or changing the way nutrients are cycled through the system. The cost to human health includes the spread of disease as well as allergens; to the economy damage to agriculture and infrastructure; and to the environment the irretrievable loss of native species, damaging ecosystems and the biodiversity that underpins them.

It is estimated that 10-15 % of the alien species identified in the European environment have spread and cause environmental, economic and/or social damage. Species like Giant hogweed, signal crayfish, Zebra mussels and muskrats now impact human health, cause substantial damage to forestry, crops and fisheries, and congestion in waterways. Japanese knotweed for example inhibits the growth of other plants, outcompetes native plants, and seriously damages infrastructure, with huge economic implications. Studies have shown that in England, Scotland and Wales, this one plant alone causes 205 million of damage each year.
