I saw your nanny: From Bad to Better

PERSPECTIVE
From Bad to Better, and it only took 2 years! I have been a nanny off and on for the last 5 years. I took my first nanny job during my second semester of college. I had been babysitting since the age of 13, and at this point, I had taken 3 Child Development classes as well as volunteered at a local Day Care Center. I used Care.com and Sittercity.com to find a nanny job. I had posted my profile with background and driving checks on file. I had received numerous responses and answers to all of the jobs that I had applied to, and thought things were going great. I narrowed the replies down to 3 families that I thought were offering the perfect gigs.

Family 1: A work at home mom and a dad who worked outside of the home about 60-70 hours a week. They had one 8 month old son. They needed someone to come Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-5:30pm. They were offering $11 an hour with 4 paid sick days a year, and 2 weeks paid vacation a year (one week of my choice, and one week of theirs). They lived in a safe neighborhood within walking distance to a local library, local Park, Gymboree, Toddler Play Center, and a Children?s Museum. Family 2: Mom and Dad both worked outside of the home. They had one 4 and a half month old daughter. They needed someone Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. They were offering $12 an hour, no paid sick days, one week paid vacation. They lived in the same neighborhood as I, probably only 5 miles away from me. They were offering to buy the nanny a membership to the local Zoo, the local Gymboree, and the local YMCA. Family 3: Mom worked outside of the home while dad worked in a home office and traveled about 15 days of every month. They had a 6 month old daughter. They needed someone Tuesday-Saturday from 7am-4pm. They were offering $11 an hour, 3 weeks paid sick days/vacation days a year, and lived in the same neighborhood as Family #1.

I chose to work with Family 3, mainly because I felt as though I had really connected with not only the parents, but also the baby. They were offering what I was asking, and the schedule seemed to really work for me. I started the job, and everything went great?for about the first month. At the beginning of month two, dad began traveling more, and mom?s job was becoming more demanding. They asked if I?d be interested in becoming a live in, and I agreed upon the agreement of an increase in pay. I moved in the following week, and my pay had increased to $14 an hour. Mom started working 12 hour days, and we saw dad about a week every month. I became very connected to the child, and it was almost as though I was a parent to this baby as her actual parents were rarely around. It wasn?t long until I was responsible for this baby during every moment she was awake. Weekends and weekdays started to blend, and I was feeling trapped. I dropped all of my classes that semester, and it got to the point where I was never away from the baby. About 11 months into the job, it had become too much. I needed space, I needed me time, I just needed to get out.

After a week of finding the time, I was finally able to sit down with the mother and father. I expressed my concerns, and they had told me they agreed. They also chose this time to tell me that they were expecting their second child. (How they found the time, I will never know!) They told me that they felt as though I wasn?t a good match for their family. I was shocked, devastated, angry. I wasn?t a match for their child? I was with her every second of every day. I loved her as though she was my own. I couldn?t imagine not seeing her everyday. While I was the one to start the conversation, I didn?t expect to take such a shocking turn. They let me know that they would only need me for one more week. MB?s parents had decided to move in with them and help raise their grandchildren. Parents and I had agreed that I would still be able to see the little girl, and I accepted it. I worked the following week, and received my final paycheck. I wasn?t given a thank you for time/services, I wasn?t given any sort of bonus, I wasn?t even told goodbye by the parents.

I tried to contact the family numerous times that following month, and still to this day have never heard back from them. I felt like I had lost a part of me. I miss that little girl so much, still to this day. Since I left that job, I have been working as an Infant/Toddler Class instructor at many local Recreation Centers. I taught classes such as Baby Sign, Music and Movement, Baby Yoga, Focus and Flexibility, Mommy and Me, Ballerina Babies, and a few others. I did this job for about a year, before I decided to go back to school. Upon reaching the decision to go back to school, I decided to go back to a career as a Nanny. I began the strenuous search for a job, interviewed with many families. This time around, I made my requests very clear, demanded the use of a contract, searched more for a family who practiced parenting styles similar to mine.

After 3 months of searching, I finally found the job that worked for me. I now work for a family with a 6 month old baby girl. The parents both work outside of the home. We have a mutual trusting relationship. We have a respect for each other and are working together every day to raise this amazing baby. I have no complaints over my new job. I have been here for 3 months now, and have not had a bad moment in this job. They have accepted me into their family. I work M-F 7am-3:30pm. I am invited to their weekly family game night. I occasionally babysit for them outside of my scheduled work hours. I get a month off every three months paid. After 2 years, I have found my happiness. - Anonymous

Yao Ming tries to score in Chinese private equity

Yao Ming during his Houston Rockets days.

Former Houston Rockets star Yao Ming is trying to be as big in the private equity world as the 7-foot-6-inch retired player was on the basketball court.

Want China Times reported that the ex-Rocket has been involved in two Chinese private equity fund management companies since 2011. He reportedly lost $7 million on an unidentified stock exchange recently, the website reported.

According to Want China Times, Yao's first venture is D&F Capital, which was established by his agent, Lu Hao. It is responsible for China's first sports-industry-focused private equity fund.

The other venture is ES Capital Group International in which Yao took over the majority stake in July 2011. He has placed members of his team in to key board positions, renaming it Chonqing Yufu Assets Management Group.

You can read more of Want China Times' report on Yao's financial industry endeavors here.

For juvenile moose, Momma's boys and girls fare best

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Based on ten years of fieldwork in the Tetons of Wyoming, WCS Conservation Biologist, University of Montana Professor and study author Dr. Joel Berger looked at whether body size of juvenile moose and maternal presence were related to survival of the young animals. In animals from elk to lizards and fish, size matters, and larger individuals enjoy a survival advantage. However, results of Berger?s study showed that for juvenile moose, body mass had no significant effect on overwinter survival. Maternal presence did.

The study appears in the early view section of the on-line edition of the journal Conservation Biology.

The study found that orphaned moose in their first winter were subjected to 8 to 47 times more aggression from adult moose than were young moose whose mothers were present. Overall, the survival of orphan calves was about 8 times lower than those with mothers.

Along with facing more aggression from kicking by adult females and being displaced from the best feeding areas, Berger theorized that orphans incur greater metabolic costs and expend more energy in deep snow. Why orphans were attacked more was not clear, but Berger raised the possibility that mothers were trying to maintain more resources for their own offspring.

?These findings highlight the importance of maternal presence rather than body size and suggest policy changes may be warranted in how harvest quotas are set,? said Berger. ?In some circumstances, the shooting of mothers with young has been permitted under the assumption that calf survival is minimally affected. Clearly, that is not the case.?

In another development from the study, Berger pioneered a new method to estimate the size of juveniles without resorting to immobilization by darting or netting by helicopters ? both methods that are stressful to wildlife. Instead, Berger used photogrammetry?a process of using photographs to determine the properties of objects. Digitally measuring head sizes on photographs enabled estimation of juvenile body mass in a quick and non-invasive fashion.

Berger said, ?Other methods of acquiring data on large animals are exhaustive, expensive and more invasive. Photogrammetric assessment has shown to be accurate, widely deployable and much easier on the animals and scientists, and the findings in this study illustrate the method can be used to inform conservation planning.?

The Tate Modern's Undercurrent

No, this isn?t part of a gypsy-laden renaissance fair. London?s The Tate Modern recently opened its doors to six psychics for the opening weekend of Undercurrent, a festival at the new The Tanks gallery running through August 27th. Images of crystal balls and large warts may fill your head, but according The Guardian, the trained fortunetellers' accessories and setting are much less theatrical; they sat in plain wooden booths inviting museum-goers to interact.?

The art exhibit was part of Jon Fawcett?s EIR installation piece, which opened the 11-day-long show. Undercurrent?s remaining exhibits include Touch and Vision, which blasts museum-goers with music and records the effects, and Tweet Me Up!, a spontaneous photography collaboration via proverbial social media outlets. The combination of off-the-wall acts is something no one could foretell. Well, no one but the psychics that is.

With a spritely klatch of scantily-clad models flying around a pop-up pool party, slapping around beach balls and cavorting to a live deejay's techno music, Florida?s most hyperactive playground kicked off a fitting new tourism campaign, ?It?s So Miami,? on a recent balmy afternoon in New York City?s Union Square. The slogan is clearly more about reinforcing the Latin-infused city?s authority as America?s preeminent destination for escapism than proffering anything newfangled or undiscovered. But the irony of Miami?s decision to double down on its hedonistic caricature is that the city truly is emerging as a genuine cultural hub with gravitas and depth.

T-Mobile launching 'truly unlimited' 4G data service add-on September 5th (Update)

TMobile leak suggests 'truly' unlimited 4G data addon launching September 5th

If the "unlimited" data currently offered by T-Mobile that gets its speeds throttled down all too soon has failed to satisfy, there may be relief on the way. TMoNews has obtained pictures of a flyer indicating the carrier will introduce a new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data add-on ($30 for Classic talk and text customers, $20 for Value) that allows for actually unlimited usage of 4G data. There is of course always a fly in the ointment, and in this case it's that it doesn't alow for Smartphone Mobile Hotspot usage, so if you're hoping for official tethering support you'll need one of the other packages. The materials suggest it plans to upsell current 2GB package subscribers by pointing out the can get an unlimited and uncapped experience for just $10 more per month. We'll have to wait and see if this comes true (along with all the other highly anticipated September 5th reveals) but if it does, would it be enough for you to switch to the remaining major carrier that doesn't directly offer LTE (yet) or the iPhone?

Update: In a quick turnaround, this has just gone from rumor to officially confirmed. Check the press release after the break for the details, but it's all just as we'd heard.

Entrance exam books: the key to success

Entrance exams are one of the key aspects of everyone?s academic career. Somewhere down the line we all have been a part of some or the other entrance exam.

Entrance tests have now become an integral part, right from when a kindergartener enters school and goes on till degrees of higher orders like a Ph.D or an M.Phil. The most helpful resort when it comes to a comprehensive approach to exam preparation are entrance exam books. From engineering exams to medical clearance, from civil services to CAT and MATs all have their key to success within those bind papers. Along with relevant knowledge and wisely distributed chapters with points to remember, these preparation books make themselves extremely important. Usually they are updated every year with the last years sample papers for reference.

Entrance books are mostly sought before when a few months remain for exams to happen as they prove to be very helpful for revision.

The approach might differ for different exams and also might differ from one individual?s approach to others. Some engineering aspirants refer books from the beginning and try solving questions immediately after covering up a certain topic. And simultaneously solve all possible types that have appeared in previous years. Others might want to refer to them once after they have had completed the entire syllabus and are ready with all the topics. This process might differ for others. Among the famous examinations that persist in our country are CAT, AIEEE, IIT-JEE, CLAT, TOEFL, UPSC, NDA, MEE etc. Some preparatory materials become the only source of information and cover up the entire syllabus in a comprehensive and easy to read manner. Exams like CLAT are based on the legal infrastructure in the country and deals with laws that are a part of the longest written constitution of the world. In such cases, these entrance books play a crucial role and hence prove very beneficial for the students. These books help guide these students to pay attention to certain areas and outline the important segments.

The sample papers and question banks which these books provide prove very helpful for the aspirants as it helps them have a grasp on time and accuracy. It gives them an idea as to what their current speed of attempting questions is and to improve it in the remaining time. Students sitting for papers which employ negative markings find such practice to be very helpful in improving their speed in attempting maximum questions in the limited time slot and reducing negatives. These entrance exam books are a new venture and did not exist in the full fledged form as now. But even though they were not an integral part of the screening processes earlier, they have now become indispensible. The experiences of successful candidates who have had great help from these books definitely hint that these books have conditioned themselves entirely according to the examination system. The catch here is whichof the available entrance books should one refer to? It should be a strategized decision on books recommended either by a faculty or a senior, or the ones that are highly followed and recommended by a reliable educational website.

House hunting: Know the budget before you start

Buying a house can be a minefield of high hopes and dashed expectations. Figuring out exactly how much you can spend before you start will make it a lot easier.

We didn?t discriminate too much, but we did find ourselves mostly looking at more expensive homes. We would wander through some higher-end house and imagine rooms done up as nurseries and other rooms done up as the bedroom of a younger boy and we?d smile and dream.

Eventually, we came to realize that our daughter was going to arrive on the scene sooner rather than later and we needed to get serious about the house hunting. We started figuring out what we could actually afford.

Our back-of-the-envelope calculations were a bit disheartening. Then, we went to a lender to get pre-approved for a loan.

The amount we got pre-approved for was less than any home we had looked at up to that point. We had to completely start over with our home search, with significantly readjusted expectations.

For starters, we had wasted all of the visits we?d made to houses before we went to the lender. All of that time, when we thought we were figuring out just what we wanted and identifying some prospects, was more or less for naught. None of the homes we looked at were ones that we could actually afford.

Beyond that, we had to readjust our expectations, too. When we began to look at houses in our realistic price range, we couldn?t help but notice the differences between those houses and the ones we were previously looking at. It took us some time to adjust our expectations for the house we would get.

It?s very likely that we didn?t give a fair shake to some of the homes we looked at after our price adjustment, simply because we were still comparing them to the expensive homes.

A much better approach would have been to know what we could afford before we even started looking.

How could we have done that? The easiest method would have been to simply go to a lender or two and get pre-approved for our mortgage. This would have made it clear what the bank would lend to us.

Beyond that, calculating how much house you can really afford is a very wise move. You should not be investing more than 25% of your salary each year into mortgage payments. Some sources offer a higher percentage as a guideline, but I see no good reason to push your luck on a major purchasing decision like this one.

Calculate your family?s salary per year, then divide that by 48. You?ll see how much your monthly mortgage payment should be at most. Then, use a mortgage calculator to figure out what monthly payments look like for various amounts, interest rates, and terms so you get a feel for what you?ll be paying. I strongly encourage sticking with fifteen year mortgages.

If you start your search in a realistic place, you?re much more likely to find a property you?ll love as well as easily afford. Start off in the wrong place and it could be a very long search, indeed.

Record haul of uranium harvested from seawater

Lingering doubts over the future of US energy security are breathing new life into a technology that has lain dormant for more than a decade.

Researchers at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have more than doubled the amount of uranium that can be extracted from seawater using Japanese technology developed in the late 1990s.

The world's oceans contain around 4.5 billion tons of uranium, enough fuel to power every nuclear plant on the planet for 6,500 years. The results were presented on 21 August at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia.

"Our original goal was to double what the Japanese have achieved with absorption capacity," says PNNL chemical oceanographer Gary Gill. "We have surpassed that."

The technology Japanese researchers pioneered uses long mats of braided plastic fibres, embedded with uranium-absorbent amidoxime, to capture trace amounts of uranium in the ocean. The mats are placed 200 metres underwater to soak up uranium before being brought to the surface. They are then washed in an acidic solution that captures the radioactive metal for future refinement.

Cheaper method

To make this process more economical, ORNL chemical scientist Sheng Dai says US researchers used plastic fibres with 10 times more surface area than the Japanese design, allowing for a greater degree of absorption on a similar platform.

They tested their new design at the PNNL's marine testing facility in Washington State. The results show the new design cuts the cost of extracting uranium from seawater from $1232 to $660 per kilogram.

While extracting uranium from seawater is still five times more expensive than mining uranium from the Earth, the research shows that seawater uranium harvesting could be a much-needed economic backstop for the nuclear industry moving forward into the 21st century.

"A sharp spike in uranium prices in 2007 had many people scared in terms of the sustainability of the nuclear industry," Dai says. "That was what spurred the [Department of Energy] to revisit developing the technology."

Gill says researchers think they are maybe three years away from having prototype systems to test.

"This is very challenging technology to develop," he says. "But it holds a lot of promise for the US in the future."

Coffee Girls and Remedy Food + Drink with BREAD! KC | Bread KC!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When Max Watson of Remedy Food + Drink first told us he wanted to cook for a BREAD! KC dinner, we were beyond excited.? When Lindsey Patterson of Coffee Girls, conveniently located next door to Remedy, offered the use of her space for the event, it seemed that the stars were aligning.? When we received three riveting and timely grant applications from Laura Isaac, Chuck Smith and Sarah Star Wilkison, we knew it was going to be a great event.? But on Sunday, July 29th, we were blown away!

Over 72 people beat the heat that day (an impressive 106?F) and joined us in support of Kansas City artists and their projects. Although the space was packed and it took some time to make it through the serving line, diners seemed pleased as soon as they had their first taste of the chilled Crenshaw melon soup with cr?me fra?che sorbet that Max and his crew prepared.? Gillis Growth Grove, a project started through the Gillis center for at-risk children and families, graciously donated a bounty of fresh produce, which we transformed into a wilted kale and tomato salad.? Ciabattini from Farm to Market Bread Co. rounded out the meal while Coffee Girls provided an endless supply of iced toddy.

All the presentations were of the highest quality, but the $644 Bread! Grant was ultimately awarded to Sarah Star Wilkison.? She plans to use the funds to pay performers and provide costumes for her women?s protest performance piece, which will take place throughout the Kansas City area this fall.

Thanks again and again and again to Max Watson, Remedy, and the kitchen crew; Lindsey Patterson and the Coffee Girls staff for their hospitality (and use of their dish washer!); Theo Bunch and Gillis Growth Grove; Farm to Market Bread Co.; our three amazing presenters; Kevin Kinsella, all of our loyal supporters; and, of course, our family and friends.

Long-awaited Somali Poll Postponed: Trouble Ahead? ? Democracy ...

The news out of Mogadishu is that yesterday?s scheduled election, in which freshly appointed members of parliament were to select a new president, was postponed. MPs announced the delay in advance of their inaugural session, telling reporters that unspecified work must still be completed before parliament can proceed with the election for both president and speaker of the house.

The reason for the delay? While it?s easy to be cynical about Somalia?s transition ? the latest in a series of failed attempts characterized by violent opportunism, shifting clan loyalties, and counterproductive foreign interventions ? yesterday?s announcement likely derives as much from concerns over proper procedure as it does from outright political dysfunction.

Somali representatives and government officials have been operating on an accelerated timeline following the August 1 implementation of the new constitution. The Transitional Federal Government (TFG), an 8-year old, western-supported regime with only sporadic control of Mogadishu much less the surrounding regions in South/Central Somalia, lost its governing mandate on August 20 ? yesterday. So by the time the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) finalized the new constitution, it had 19 days to complete a variety of tasks before the sun set on the old government. These included, among other things, publishing a public list of traditional leaders and empowering a technical selection committee to vet and appoint 275 new members of parliament. Although the technical committee?s job was made somewhat more simple by the institution of a 4.5 rule ? assigning each of the four major Somali clans 61 seats, and a coalition of smaller clans a single allotment half that size ? the selection criteria came under significant pressure as the committee was lobbied by not only domestic actors, but international ones as well, some of whom sent the committee intelligence information about potential selectees and their alleged roles in fomenting or organizing political violence in the past. Female representation emerged as a particularly contentious issue as well after the new constitution was passed without a 30 percent quota for parliament, which had been included in previous drafts. And clans of course engaged in fierce advocacy ? and outright bribery, the UN claimed ? to promote certain nominees and preempt disqualification of others.

These issues slowed the process to the point where as of yesterday morning, only 215 of 275 individuals had been appointed and sworn in as members of Somalia?s new parliament. Although the transitional procedures allow for an election with only a two-thirds quorum?(184 MPs), the decision to delay may suggest that leading MPs recognize the distinction between formal procedure and legitimacy. The new constitution and corresponding 4.5 formula were built upon agreement from a fragile conglomeration of clans, traditional leaders, and members of the political and business elite ? all of whom have been notorious in the past for fleeting allegiances and a remarkable capacity for disruptive behavior.?Their full participation in the upcoming election may be necessary to ensure cross-cutting clan buy-in and avoid the emergence of powerful spoilers. Rather than risk disaffection by adhering to a strict timeline, the committee seems to have chosen a safer, and potentially more fruitful, path by swearing in all successfully vetted members and appointing the senior-most MP as temporary speaker to guide the representative body in its duties as the next steps are further prepared and negotiated. Early reports indicate that the decision to delay has the support of most key participants.

Still, that these calculated delays were even necessary speaks to a deeper level of political distress. The most recent?draft constitution, on which the final version was based (with only minor changes), was generated on June 12. Even with a looming August 20 deadline for transition, the NCA could not move the draft into its final form for nearly two months, owing in part to fundamental disagreements over democratic principles and, as mentioned above, female participation in government. Ultimately the quota for female MPs was dropped as part of a ?gentlemen?s agreement? among elders to appoint a similar percentage of female members without a permanent law mandating such representation. This wouldn?t be much of a problem if the issue didn?t emerge from a place of pretty severe skepticism over the role of women in public life. I recently spoke to a former Director General in a TFG ministry who expressed strong misgivings over current female parliamentarians, many of whom he accused of subverting traditional Somali values and engaging in dishonorable and despicable behavior that shouldn?t be repeated here. Though his opinion is not universally shared, Somalia?s largely traditional and Islamic society has lagged behind others in empowering women to take on significant public roles. And despite the ?gentlemen?s agreement? that broke the stalemate a few weeks ago, the proportion of new female parliamentarians has thus far not approached 30 percent. Not even close.

Yet this issue, while important, is not the largest area of concern, nor source of potential future breakdown. That distinction, unsurprisingly, still rests with the clans and their often incompatible motivations for political engagement. While many observers are once again hailing this moment as a great achievement ? the UN even released a rather optimistic?joint statement with other actors that proclaimed an end to the transition ? it?s important to remember that little has yet changed. Parliamentarians were selected, not elected. The 4.5 clan formula is still the basis for representation rather than districts based on population or geography. The leading candidate for president is thought by most to be the current president, a former member of a prominent Islamist Courts movement in 2006 and thought to lack political strength and a broad constituency. Somaliland?s status remains unresolved. Puntland?s transition may have difficulty moving forward without a more clearly defined political relationship between the federal regions (particularly regarding electoral systems and political parties). Public support for the whole enterprise is questionable since the TFG was never widely loved, seen primarily as a western creation that did little but prolong conflict. In a still insecure environment, communities will remain loyal to their clan which only further endows elders with political power and entrenches clan interests in the fabric of federal government politics.

If history is any guide, clans may be constructive participants only to the extent that they perceive a positive result for their communities. Political power being a finite resource, the presence of all major clan communities in Mogadishu may be the biggest, albeit counterintuitive, sign that the status quo remains. If real change was occurring, we would likely see at least a few prominent defections from those who lost out on the reapportioning of power. As it is, everyone seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach ? and they?re even more inclined to do so since the AU?s intervention force, AMISOM, seems only weeks away from finally taking the last major al-Shabaab stronghold in Kisumu, south of Mogadishu. If that happens, and AMISOM further secures South/Central and the areas around Mogadishu, it will represent the largest area of influence for a non-Islamist Somali government in many, many years.

That?s a prize worth sticking around for, and the new government (if and when a president is elected and appoints a cabinet) will face much steeper internal challenges if al-Shabaab is further marginalized in both geography and operating capacity. Stability and security are two of the most important needs for Somalia, so this result would certainly be welcome in that respect. But the worry is that such stability would be illusory and fleeting if the government succumbs to the inevitable pressure that would emerge from clans and elite actors competing over access to the first meaningful state institutions in a generation. Provided access by the new constitution, all major groups are now positioned in Mogadishu to do just that. The following weeks and months will be the true test for the durability of this new transitional government.

Indian opposition to block parliament until PM resigns

India's opposition vowed on Wednesday to block parliamentary proceedings until the prime minister resigned over a coal scandal, raising the prospect of more legislative deadlock and stalled reforms.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was implicated by the national auditor in a report published last Friday which suggested the government had lost out on billions of dollars of revenue by gifting away coal mining rights.

Singh, who has seen his reputation as "Mr Clean" plummet amid a string of scandals in his second term in government, served as acting coal minister from 2004-2009.

Senior opposition leader Arun Jaitley said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would obstruct parliamentary proceedings until the 79-year-old Singh took personal responsibility and stepped down.

"Parliamentary obstructionism is normally to be avoided, but in rare cases parties do adopt it," Jaitley told the Times Now television channel in an interview as both houses of parliament were adjourned.

"The way forward is that the prime minister must accept his culpability. The reason is very obvious. For five out of the eight years (analysed by the auditor)... he himself was the coal minister," Jaitley added.

The threat to disrupt parliament comes as India's economy is badly faltering, with investors and business leaders looking for decisive action from the under-fire government to restore confidence and spur economic growth.

In 2010, the BJP and opposition allies blocked an entire session of parliament, forcing adjournments for 22 business days in a row which meant no legislation was passed.

The report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said private companies had made windfall gains of about $33.4 billion since 2004 after being given mining rights via a process that "lacked transparency and objectivity".

The government had known of the huge profits for private operators, but had failed to introduce an open bidding process that would have brought in revenue for the national exchequer, the CAG said.

The report did not contain any allegations of corruption or criminal practices.

Posted on Thursday, August 16, 2012 by ? Janeera

Now that you?ve crossed the 6 dreadful seas in the fairy tale named iPad apps and you are in the urge and fear of crossing the 7th and the last one to get the magical pearl called as app success. This influencing stage is nothing but the marketing of your iPad app. I prefer calling iPad app marketing as the ?Game Changer? as it has the potential to make or break your entire efforts involved right from the task of app planning till app approval from the Apple App Store (iOS). The mighty iTunes Store has approved 500,000 apps as on May 2011 and just think about the tough competition you ought to face and marketing your iPad app with brilliant and workable strategies is the best approach that can pave way for your app?s ultimate success. The top 10 useful tips for marketing your iPad apps are:
Tips for iPad Apps Marketing

1. Ensure that your app serves a purpose:

iPad is an exuberant creation of Apple Inc. With myriad reasons on the queue for using it, the most promising one is the kind of apps available for iPad. You can kick start your marketing even before you start developing your prolific iPad app, wondering how? Whether it is a functional app or a gaming app, make certain that your app serves a purpose and the name and the logo representing your app should revolve around its purpose. Depicting a reason to use the app will surely drive people towards it.

2. Focus on marketing your app extremely well in the App store first:

Apple iTunes store is of prime importance and is the right place to start your app marketing journey. People will first look into the iTunes store for the latest apps for their iPad than anywhere else in the world. So ensure that you market app perfectly with all the necessary information required for influencing the purchasing decision of your potential users.

3. Attractive app description matters:

Before trying out your iPad app, the app store populace will be curious in knowing what your app is all about. Only an alluring, satisfying and out of the ordinary app description can convey the right message you wish to transform to your target group. Let it be crisp, clear, exceptional and self-explanatory without any kind of jargons.

4. Have a unique website for your iPad app:

Set up a separate website for your iPad app as it can do all that is needed to drive the right traffic at the right time by giving personal attention to your prospective customers. You can set up ?Live Chat support? for encouraging your customers, post special videos of your app, have a separate page with ?Frequently asked questions? and more.

5. Submit your app for reviews in renowned sites:

Submitting your app in popular iPad app review sites is a good idea to get all that you want from your app marketing propaganda. With increased number of reviews you can abruptly see your app flourishing with greater than before number of downloads and quick visibility.

6. Create the right buzz for your app:

You can generate the right buzz for your app by advertising in offline advertising sources like popular app magazines, sign boards, TV, newspaper, radio etc. No doubt that this buzz along with your online app marketing will bring in a considerable traffic for your iPad app.

7. Social media tools are powerful indeed:

Gaining social media signals for your iPad app like ?tweets, likes, +1, reddits, shares? and more are exceedingly potent in gaining recognition for your iPad app. By doing this you develop a chance to focus on the target group easily and build up a good relationship with your niche. Even if they don?t buy your app, they give you a great business opportunity just by clicking and sharing it with other friends in their community.

8. Try away with trial offers:

You can always drive people with attractive offers, trial versions, free for a day campaigns and more. Interested people will surely prefer giving a try before committing themselves in actual downloads. Ensure that the trial version is developed in such a way that it convinces the end user and kindles their buying verdict.

9. Highlight the features that make your app unique:

You know that your app store competition is longer than the ?Great wall of China?. All you need to do is to make sure that all of your app marketing strategies highlight the remarkable features that makes your app unique from your competitors? and showcase the exact value that it is about to add to the end user.

10. Reward your audience for sharing their app enhancement ideas:

Invite reviews, feedback, comments, suggestions and ideas for enhancement for your iPad app before the actual release in the iTunes Store. Reward the best idea with any attractive gifts and implement that function in your iPad app. See the kind of response you?ll get for your app because people feel special as you?ve made them a part of your app?s success. Children's Health and Fitness - Len Saunders

From a NBC affiliate?..

Childhood obesity is a nationwide problem, but some local kids are learning how to take their health into their own hands.

The Junior League of Reno is teaming up with chef Jennifer Bushman to teach kids how to make healthy foods for themselves and their families for free.

?It?s sad to see some of the kids that are your friends not being so healthy,? said Aspen, a 12-year-old taking the class.

Aspen is ahead of the curve, and she?s one of dozens of kids today who?s learning to make healthy choices.

SOT JENNIFER BUSHMAN, Culinary Educator: ?The earlier we start them on these things the more likely it is that they?ll carry these habits into their adult lives,? Bushman said.

Bushman is teaching a class today with the help of volunteers from the Junior League called Kids in the Kitchen ? and it?s fighting childhood obesity with education.

SOT TAMRA BARNES, Junior League of Reno: ?It?s just a new way of looking at food, being healthier, stepping outside their box, learning how to try new things, said Tamra Barnes, who volunteered today.

Bushman says getting the kids involved hands-on is a huge help.

?If you were tomake dinner for them they might reject half of it, but if they actually participate in making the salad they?ll eat it because they?re so proud of it,? Bushman said.

They hope the kids will eat healthy foods and stay active, which many of the kids already know is important.

2-SHOT ALYCIA, 9: Do you think it?s fun to eat healthy and exercise? Yes. Do you think everybody should do it? Um hm.

?It makes it so you don?t get tired as much, and if you eat junk food then your stomach hurts,? said Tristan, a 13-year-old participant.

But if your kids don?t like healthy snacks Bushman says keep trying.

A Call From Home - Genealogy For The Family Historian-Links to ...

If you are of Irish descent, you are being called home.

The Gathering: a year long calling from your ancestor's homeland asking you to return, even if you have never been, because Ireland knows if you are a part of the Irish Diaspora, then your heart surely belongs to them.

The Irish Government along with private partners, businesses and the tourism industry, have designated 2013 as The Gathering: a yearlong celebration of Irish music, heritage, festivals, sporting events that they hope will call home many of the Irish Diaspora around the world.

It begins in Dublin in January 2013 and festivals and events are sprinkled throughout the country until the end of the year. But The Gathering is not just carnivals and fairs. It is history lectures, genealogy sessions and clan reunions; a yearlong focus of discovering or rediscovering your Irish roots.

The Irish Diaspora are Irish immigrants and their descendents living in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada--even as far away as Argentina and South Africa. They are more than 80 million people, Irish born or of Irish descent, living outside Ireland: a little country of a mere 6.4 million today.

A country that over 160 years ago was tragically shattered by famine and poverty; bled dry of its people who were pulled away by a basic need for survival.

There will be many who cannot go but that does not mean if not there, The Gathering cannot be experienced. I expect the event will reach out through the Internet and we will hear more as the year approaches. I sense Ireland understands their Irish Diaspora have begun searching for their ancestors and in turn, the country is slowly opening its vaults.

PRONI and Irish Genealogy (a government sponsored website), are making more ancestral records available and free to the public. It is a constant appeal by the Irish Genealogical Society to the Irish Government, pleading their case that Irish descendents "own" their ancestor's records: a principle of public ownership and right of access.

Our desire to grasp hold of our family history and feel our ancestral heritage continues to expand and blossom. And it is refreshing that an entire country is calling us back.

To gather up its flock and perhaps open its vaults so we can experience a bit of our Irish ancestors at home and maybe...even abroad.

Keep searching for answers,

Cheryl

No evidence that drug used for preventing life-threatening bleeding in women during labor works

No evidence that drug used for preventing life-threatening bleeding in women during labor works

Monday, August 20, 2012

There is insufficient evidence for the effectiveness of a drug that is being used increasingly to prevent life-threatening bleeding in women after giving birth in community settings in low income countries, according to a review of all the available research published today (Monday) in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. [1]

Misoprostol (brand name Cytotec) was originally developed for treating gastric ulcers, but is increasingly used in low- and middle-income countries for preventing postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). It is given to women during labour to prevent uncontrolled bleeding, and it is included on the World Health Organisation's Essential Medicines List for this use.

However, researchers led by Professor Allyson Pollock from the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health at Queen Mary, University of London (UK) identified 172 studies on the use of misoprostol during labour and found that only six had enough information to enable them to review whether or not the drug was effective in preventing PPH in rural and community settings in low income countries. The six studies failed to provide sufficient evidence that the drug worked and most had problems with study design and the fact the findings were not applicable generally.

"Current evidence to support the use of misoprostol in home or community settings in low- and middle-income countries for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage is, at best, inconclusive," said Professor Pollock.

"Yet, despite there being no proper evidence of benefit, the WHO and some countries have put it on the Essential Medicine Lists and the drug is being pushed hard by networks of global public-private partnerships and industry in low- and middle-income countries. Countries such as Nepal, India and Uganda are promoting and using it. We urge the WHO to urgently review its decision to put misoprostol on its Essential Medicines List."

According to WHO estimates, there were 342,900 deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth in 2008, most of them occurring in developing countries. A quarter of these are thought to be associated with PPH while giving birth.

The main risk factor for PPH is anaemia, which is easily treated if it is diagnosed. But without antenatal screening for the condition it is impossible to identify women who may have developed it and who are at increased risk of life-threatening bleeding during labour.

"The most effective preventive strategy for PPH is prevention of anaemia, good antenatal care including good hygiene and sanitation and good care during labour," said Professor Pollock. "Developed countries would not dream of giving women misoprostol during labour on the basis of the current evidence, yet industry and health practitioners are pushing it hard in developing countries."

One of the reasons that misoprostol is popular in developing countries is that it is a fairly stable drug that doesn't degrade if not kept in cold storage conditions, and which does not have to be given intravenously. For this reason, it is more likely to be used outside hospitals, in settings such as the home and local community when women go into labour.

"Countries should be concentrating on improving their primary care facilities, rather than thinking there is a pill to prevent every ill," said Professor Pollock. "Misoprostol is being used inappropriately at present, and the money being spent on purchasing the drug would be better spent elsewhere, for instance, in ensuring there are skilled attendants during delivery and adequate antenatal services that can detect and help to prevent complications."

Switched On: The watch and the workhorse

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On the watch and the workhorse

In mature, competitive markets flooded with products, many brands come and go. Last week, though, two companies came to New York City to celebrate milestone anniversaries of their electronic products. Lenovo celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ThinkPad as Casio marked the 30th anniversary of the G-Shock watch. The notebook PC remains among the most versatile and complex devices consumers use today while the watch is one of the simplest. Yet some commonality between these two products may include lessons for other technology products that wish to remain around for decades.
