To win the future, heed this ginormous list of amazing (but overused) words

The headline above contains a generous sampling from this year's 'List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.' Read on.

A list that tracks the most overused words of 2011? How amazing is that?

Oops! "Amazing? tops the official "List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness," released Friday by Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. This is the 37th?year the university has compiled a list of the hoariest, most annoying, and most clich?d words and phrases emanating from weary (or lazy) jawbones this year.

?With so much media and so many more opportunities to communicate, a lot of people find they get lazy and get stuck on a word or phrase to express themselves as the easiest way to get their point across,? says John Shibley, a public relations officer for the university who has helped compile the list for the past 15 years.

The university cobbles the list together from submissions streaming in from around the world, including Australia and Western Europe. This year, about 4,000 nominations arrived electronically.

?Amazing? earned the top spot because of its ubiquitous use to describe anything, great or small, no matter its relative merit. Examples: ?That Hot Pocket I just ate was amazing!? Or, ?The French Revolution was amazing!?

Frequent use by television jabbers Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Anderson Cooper, and every run-of-the-mill red carpet celebrity is blamed for spreading "amazing" into practically every conversation heard on television, streets, subways, or dinner tables. At least, Mr. Shibley says, its use replaces that 1980s chestnut, ?awesome.?

?Amazing? received 1,500 nominations, says Shibley. ?The mailbox was packed for ?amazing? ? that one just slammed to the top of the unpopularity contest this year."?

The list, which dates to 1975, began as a New Year?s Eve game concocted by former Lake Superior State University public relations director Bill Rabe. In the pre-Internet days, the university used to receive as many as 800 nominations by letter or postcard. The proliferation of media now generates thousands of submissions worldwide, but also more opportunities to suck a word or phrase dry.

?There?s ample opportunity for a buzzword or buzz phrase to get overused. The environment?s very rich to draw from,? Shibley says.

Here are the other overused words the list?s gatekeepers hope will one day be banished:

Israel kills al Qaeda-linked chief in Gaza strike

GAZA/JERUSALEM | Fri Dec 30, 2011 8:28am EST

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters)- Israel killed the leader of an al Qaeda-inspired faction in the Gaza Strip on Friday, accusing him of involvement in firing rockets and a planned attack on the Jewish state from the neighboring Egyptian Sinai.

The deadly air strike was Israel's second against a Salafi Islamist militant this week. Militants identified him as Momen Abu Daf, chief of the Army of Islam, among a loose network of Palestinian groups which profess allegiance to al Qaeda and have been reinforced by volunteers who slip in from the Sinai.

Gaza's Islamist Hamas rulers, who have sometimes reined in more radical groups, are seeking an accommodation with secular Palestinian rivals and with an Egypt struggling for order after the fall of U.S.-allied President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Abu Daf died when a missile hit Gaza City's Zeitoun district, the Hamas administration's Health Ministry said. Five other Palestinians were wounded and one of them needed hospital treatment.

The Israeli military said its aircraft "targeted a terrorist squad that was identified moments before firing rockets at Israel from the northern Gaza Strip."

Abu Daf, a military statement said, had "orchestrated and executed numerous and varied terror attacks" and "was actively involved in the preparations of the attempted terror attack on the Israel-Egypt border that was thwarted this week."

EYES ON EGYPT

That appeared to refer to Israel's killing on Tuesday of another Salafi fighter, Abdallah Telbani, who the military said had been plotting strikes in which gunmen would circumvent the fortified Gaza border by attacking south Israel from the Sinai.

Israel has been on high alert for such raids since losing eight of its citizens to armed infiltrators on Egypt's porous frontier in August. Israeli troops repelling those gunmen killed five Egyptian border guards, fraying strategic ties with Cairo.

"We shoot when we're being shot at," one Israeli security official said after Friday's air strike in Gaza. "It's clear that Hamas does not have an interest in fanning the flames at this time, but it's not dousing them either."

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, responded: "Our people have the right to defend themselves, and the problem is the (Israeli) occupation which targets the Palestinian resistance."

Though Hamas echoes Salafi calls for Israel's ultimate destruction, its ambitions are framed within Palestinian nationalism, not al Qaeda-style global jihad, and include a possible ceasefire with the militarily superior Jewish state which, with Egyptian help, has tried to isolate Gaza.

Hamas took over the coastal strip in a 2007 civil war against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, which holds sway in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal and Abbas held rapprochement talks in Cairo last week against a backdrop of political upheaval across the Arab world, including Syria, where Meshaal retains a headquarters that diplomats say Hamas has scaled back.

One official said Meshaal told Abbas he was "in favor of peaceful resistance and a truce in Gaza and the West Bank at this stage," though Hamas would not meet Israel's core demand for recognition.

Two short-range rockets were launched from Gaza into Israel on Thursday and five on Wednesday, the Israeli military said. There were no casualties. The Popular Resistance Committees, an armed Palestinian faction, claimed responsibility.

SWANNELL: Aussie football a tad smelly

ANYONE who believes the A-League football competition is anything other than second-rate is kidding themselves.

There you go. That will get the round-ball fanatics gunning for me early.

Before any of you start telling me I don't know what I'm talking about and should shut my guts, bucko ... go google John Swannell (the footballer, not the photographer).

Add 14 years as a sports reporter, more than a passing interest in Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Tottenham Hotspur and I think I'm qualified enough. I've watched more football and heckled more referees than most of you have had hot dinners.

?

So ... I say again, the A-League is, for the most part, rubbish, and I, for one, am sick of the hype.

Let me say right off the bat, this isn't a crack at Gold Coast United -- the club is doing the best it can with the resources available to it.

But the truth is, Monday's M1 derby between GCU and the Brisbane Roar -- the first half at least -- was unwatchable garbage.

The second half was a marginal improvement, mainly because United suddenly realised that having possession of the ball is pointless unless you do something about trying to put it in the back of the net.

They actually started pressing forward and what do you know, ended up with a penalty.

A rubbish bit of refereeing, admittedly, but at least United forced the game into positive territory.

Fair dinkum, being a Fox Sports cameraman at an A-League game must be the easiest job in sports broadcasting -- the ball barely moved out of the middle third of the pitch on Monday night.

What the commentators called Brisbane's 'patience' I call negative, indecisive, pointless football. Side to side, then a backpass to the 'keeper.

Pointless. Boring. Unwatchable.

As my Paternal Parental Unit -- twin brother of the aforementioned England representative, and a fair centre back in his own right in his day -- said on Monday night, 'if that's how Brisbane won 30-something games in a row, what does that say about the quality of the opposition'.

Not bloody much, Pater.

The FFA and Fox can tell us how good the Australian competition is as much as they like, they can't hide the fact that our best players go where the money and the quality play is -- Europe and Asia. Leaving a second-rate competition behind.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the A-League is the only one with this problem.

The National Basketball League has the same challenges.

Anybody who is good enough is off earning a huge living where the money is -- the NBA and Europe.

Here at goldcoast.com.au and the Gold Coast Bulletin we get a lot of people moaning at us about how we don't give football an equal run to rugby league and Aussie rules.

The short answer is, the NRL and AFL are the best competitions in their sport in the world.

The A-League, and the NBL, are not.

It's that simple.

Did Cheetah from 1930s Tarzan flicks die? (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah, the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s, has died at 80. But other accounts call that claim into question.

Debbie Cobb, outreach director at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, said Wednesday that her grandparents acquired Cheetah around 1960 from "Tarzan" star Johnny Weissmuller and that the chimp appeared in Tarzan films between 1932 and 1934. During that period, Weissmuller made "Tarzan the Ape Man" and "Tarzan and His Mate."

But Cobb offered no documentation, saying it was destroyed in a 1995 fire.

Also, some Hollywood accounts indicate a chimpanzee by the name of Jiggs or Mr. Jiggs played Cheetah alongside Weissmuller early on and died in 1938.

In addition, an 80-year-old chimpanzee would be extraordinarily old, perhaps the oldest ever known. According to many experts and Save the Chimps, another Florida sanctuary, chimpanzees in captivity generally live to between 40 and 60, though Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Fla., says it has one that is around 73.

A similar claim about another chimpanzee that supposedly played second banana to Weissmuller was debunked in 2008 in a Washington Post story.

Writer R.D. Rosen discovered that the primate, which lived in Palm Springs, Calif., was born around 1960, meaning it wasn't oldest enough to have been in the Tarzan movies of Hollywood's Golden Age that starred Olympic swimming star Weissmuller as the vine-swinging, loincloth-wearing Ape Man and Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane.

While a number of chimpanzees played the sidekick role in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and `40s, Rosen said in an email Wednesday that this latest purported Cheetah looks like a "business-boosting impostor as well."

"I'm afraid any chimp who actually shared a soundstage with Weissmuller and O'Sullivan is long gone," Rosen said.

Cobb said Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure and was cremated.

"Unfortunately, there was a fire in `95 in which a lot of that documentation burned up," Cobb said. "I'm 51 and I've known him for 51 years. My first remembrance of him coming here was when I was actually 5, and I've known him since then, and he was a full-grown chimp then."

Film historian and Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osbourne said the Cheetah character "was one of the things people loved about the Tarzan movies because he made people laugh. He was always a regular fun part of the movies."

In his time, the Cheetah character was as popular as Rin Tin Tin or Asta, the dog from the "Thin Man" movies, Osbourne said.

"He was a major star," he said.

At the animal sanctuary, Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh, Cobb said. But he could also be ill-tempered. Cobb said that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would fling feces and other objects.

A Tribute to a Particular Kind of Wikipedia Plot Summary Writer

wikipedia_bad_movies645

There is a group of individuals whom Movieline would like to salute: The passionate, faceless people who lovingly record, in surprising detail and with confounding care, the full plot summaries for horrible movies on Wikipedia. Wikipedia movie plot historians, your day has come.

I first recognized this phenomenon last month. While researching several pivotal roles in Kirsten Dunst's career for the actresses's 9 Milestones in the Evolution of... feature, I noticed (and greatly appreciated) that an Internet user had heroically outlined the entire plot of her long-forgotten and laughable 1998 television movie Fifteen and Pregnant. The plot summary is delivered in four straightforward paragraphs which remarkably do not acknowledge the ridiculousness of this poorly-scripted and self-righteous project. Here is just a taste...

"The film opens with fourteen year old Tina having sex with Ray. A few days later Tina is sitting in the car with her mother and [...] Tina's mother asks her if she knows anyone who is sexually active at her age, or if she has ever been sexually active, and Tina nods her head yes, although her mother doesn't know what she is admitting."

Granted, the person who was so moved by the melodramatic play-by-play of Fifteen and Pregnant that he/she rushed to his/her computer and tapped out a painfully accurate recap, is by no means a scholar. But skill or grasp of the English language is not the point here: The dedication is.

For example, do you know how much you'd have to pay me to watch Troll 2 again and compose an entire 11 paragraph summary without a single critical inflection? (The most derogatory statement about the film in its Wikipedia entry is that it is "widely considered to be of poor quality.") Do you know how severely you would need to threaten me before I typed out 1,000 words on the detestable Rob Reiner film North? Do you know how many Target gift cards you would have to hire Woody Harrelson to strew onto a hotel bed Indecent Proposal-style before I agreed to not only view New Year's Eve but to pen an earnest six-paragraph summary of this particular Garry Marshall's holiday disaster-piece? (The answers to these three questions are "a ton," "very severely," and "like, $10,000 worth.")

The heroic Wikipedia users who composed the above plot summaries may not have saved any lives. But they did save brain cells -- brain cells that could have met a similar fate as the millions of those left to be swept up along with the neglected candy and self-respect on the floor of every Jack and Jill-screening multiplex auditorium in America last month. Because hopefully, some smart moviegoers elected to just read the Wikipedia plot summary of the film so that they could appropriately rag on it at the water cooler without paying for a partial Adam Sandler-performed lobotomy. Or maybe a few intelligent viewers decided against seeing the film after its detailed Wiki page informed them that the "comedy" would feature "cameos" from Bruce Jenner, Regis Philbin and Drew Carey.

Or maybe that is all just wishful thinking and Wikipedia plot summary movie-going prevention is just a hope for the future. Either way, I am thankful for the bold Wiki user who dared to recount every minor plot twist in Showgirls so that I never have to re-watch the film to rediscover how much Cristal and Zach paid Nomi for a lap dance at the Cheetah ($500).

So please, in honor of these Wikipedia movie plot historians, take a moment and scan through a few detailed recaps of your least favorite movies of all time. Recognize the effort, thank the faceless writers in whichever way you deem fit and maybe consider tapping out a few future plot summaries of your own. For without these loving recaps, human beings might actually have to sit through a screening of Gigli to fully recognize the film's atrociousness.

Man died trying to save grandchild in Conn. fire

The grandfather of three girls trapped in their burning home on Christmas morning died as he climbed the roof to try to save one of them, officials revealed Tuesday. The girls and their grandmother also perished in what investigators concluded was a tragic accident started by fireplace embers.

Lomer Johnson apparently collapsed outside the window of a bedroom, Stamford Fire Chief Antonio Conte told reporters.

It appears he had been planning to help the child get out; she had been placed on a pile of books, so he could reach in and grab her, officials said.

"When he went out the window, that's when he succumbed and she died just inside the window," Conte said.

"He died on the outside, and she died on the inside," Conte said. "She was right next to him."

Sometime between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, a friend staying in the home put fireplace ashes in a bag and left it either in or outside a mudroom and trash enclosure attached to the rear of the house, said Barry Callahan, Stamford's fire marshal. The fire was reported just after 4:40 a.m.

"The fire entered the house quickly and spread throughout the first floor and up two interior vertical openings, trapping the occupants on the upper floors," Callahan said.

Officials described a frantic scene after rescuers arrived early Sunday.

Neighbors said they were awakened by screams shortly before 5 a.m. and rushed outside to help but could do nothing as flames devoured the large Victorian home.

Conte said the children's mother, Madonna Badger, had climbed out a window onto scaffolding and then a flat roof. She was screaming for her children and pointed firefighters to the third floor.

Firefighters climbed to the third floor twice, but the heat and flames were too intense and the children were not where they thought they would be, he said.

Michael Borcina, a contractor and friend of Badger's who had been staying in the home, told investigators he actually had led two of the girls downstairs, but heat from the flames separated them, Conte said.

One apparently went back upstairs and another one was found with her grandmother at the bottom of the stairwell between the second and third floors, he said.

Flames were shooting out of the house when firefighters arrived, said Brendan Keatley, a firefighter who was at the scene.

"Two sides of the structure were walls of flame," Keatley said.

Firefighters used a ladder and construction scaffolding outside the house to reach the third floor, but they ran into extreme heat and poor visibility in a hallway, Keatley said. Four firefighters were injured as they searched for the victims, including a captain who suffered second-degree burns on his face, Keatley said.

Fighting the fire took a physical and an emotional toll, he said, and counselors were being made available to firefighters.

"We are devastated, just like everybody else is devastated," Keatley said Tuesday.

Homeowner Madonna Badger, a New York City ad executive, survived along with a man later identified as her boyfriend who was helping remodel the Victorian home.

There were plans for hard-wired smoke alarms, but they had not been hooked up, an official said. Officials did not know whether battery-operated ones were being used.

The home was demolished Monday due to the fire damage and safety concerns.

Badger, who is separated from her husband, had a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins. Her parents were visiting for the holidays.

Lomer Johnson had worked as a Santa at Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store in Manhattan. "Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," Saks spokeswoman Julia Bently said Monday.

Badger, a New York ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.

Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

"It is a terrible, terrible day," Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire on Sunday. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning.

Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, Conte said Monday, his voice cracking with emotion.

"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."

Badger's father known as 'Happy Santa'
Badger's parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, were going to celebrate their 49th anniversary on Monday, a family member told The New York Times. Lomer Johnson, 71, had spent Saturday working as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, a gig he had been doing since retiring as a safety director for the parent company of Jack Daniels.

The man with the long white beard loved posing as Santa, said the relative, who asked not to be named.

?That?s all he ever wanted to be,? the family member told The Times. ?He stopped shaving the day he retired.?

He advertised his services through a site called gigmasters.com, where he referred to himself as "Happy Santa." His profile reads "I am now a santa because my oldest granddaughter asked me to be a pretend Santa Claus. I have enjoyed it more than any job I've ever had."

Lomer Johnson also formerly worked to prevent fires as safety chief at a company in Kentucky.
He was remembered as a stickler for safety details by a former boss at the Louisville, Ky., liquor maker Brown-Forman Corp., where he retired as safety and security director years ago.

Former Brown-Forman executive Robert Holmes Jr. said Monday it was Johnson's job to keep plant workers safe. He says Johnson's responsibilities included planning fire drills.

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Mark Wahlberg underwear ads for Calvin Klein.

Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.

Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations.

GMO, REE, MDW: Energy Department Latest to Forecast Short Supply of Rare Earth Metals

?

In not so recent past, rare earth stocks were subject to wild speculation followed by a long drawn correction phase. Now after a month long consolidation, rare earth stocks such as General Moly Inc (NYSE: GMO), Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSE: REE), and Midway Gold Corp (NYSE: MDW) are back in action. The ?news? fuelling the renewed interest in these stocks is the United States Department of Energy forecasting a supply shortage of rare earth metals in the short to medium term.

The Energy Department is the latest to blow the short supply issue and expects at least five rare earth metals?dysprosium, terbium, europium, neodymium and yttrium to remain supply-challenged till 2015. While the department, in its assessment, said the supply constraints are expected to decrease in the medium to long term, the news of a potential short supply situation from a credible source such as the DoE is enough for smart money to pump up these stocks. This potential shortage is sure to drive up the costs of rare earth metals as markets have already seen in the case of MolyCorp. Rare earth metal supply has been constrained due to lack of capital, long lead times, trade policies, besides other factors. Meanwhile, the demand of permanent magnets which require neodymium and dysprosium, used in wind turbines, electric motors and a number of other electric appliances, is increasing continuously.

MolyCorp is probably the best pick in the industry with existing operations and profitable track record, but these small cap stocks are likely to outperform the markets if rare earth metals indeed fall short of demand. General Moly Inc (NYSE: GMO), for example, has already jumped 20 per cent in the last month on the back of positive developments related to its Mt. Hope rare earth project in the state of Nevada. This high beta stock is likely to see more buying now that the Mt. Hope project nears completion.

Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSE: REE) has updated about its Bear Lodge project in Wyoming. In addition, the company is making progress at its other projects including Bull Hill, and Whitetail Ridge. Midway Gold Corp (NYSE: MDW) is not exactly a rare earth play as its core business is gold exploration. However, many rare earth metals are found in commercially viable amounts in gold mines. As it is an exploration stage company, Midway?s story is still to unfold. However, the current price of $2.19 looks attractive after falling significantly from $3.??

(AP) ? North Korea's next leader burnished his diplomatic skills Monday, welcoming a private South Korean mourning delegation as state media revealed a new title that gives Kim Jong Un authority over political matters.

Kim Jong Un has rapidly gained prominence since the death of his father Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17, and his brief meeting with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role.

State media have showered Kim with new titles. On Saturday, the North referred to him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him. On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the ruling party.

On Monday, a South Korean delegation stood in a line on a red carpet and bowed silently during their visit to the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, where Kim Jong Il's body is lying in state in a bier surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard.

Kim Jong Un gave the South Koreans his thanks after they expressed condolences and sympathy, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said. Seoul's Unification Ministry confirmed the meeting in a statement but didn't elaborate.

The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North.

Their meeting with Kim Jong Un could be intended to push South Korea to pursue previously agreed upon cooperative projects that would give North Korea much-needed aid, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, which is in South Korea.

Footage from AP Television News in North Korea earlier showed the South Koreans being greeted by North Korean officials during a stop at a factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

Monday's meeting appeared to be Kim Jong Un's first reported meeting with South Koreans since his father's death.

The Kim family has extended its control over the country of 24 million people to a third generation with Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor.

Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years, wielded power as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission. His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party last year, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." Rodong Sinmun has also called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used years ago to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun," and state media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral is set to take place Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funereal flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

Nike Air Jordan Release Sparks Widespread Chaos

The holidays always bring out the crazy, but this is absurd.

A version of Nike's Air Jordan 11 Retro Concord shoe went on sale at midnight, with crowds lining up at stores across the country before they were even open.

An early crowd in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, outside D.C., had to dispersed by police this morning after chaos and unruliness ensued, authorities said.

Air Jordans

In Loudoun County, Virginia, more than 250 people gathered in a parking lot at the Dulles Town Center Mall because of advertised sales starting at 3 p.m.

Some managed to enter the mall before it opened, authorities said, overwhelming deputies and mall security and prompting frantic calls for assistance.

No arrests were made, though one woman suffered a leg injury and a pickpocketing was reported. Tickets for entry were later distributed by lottery.

In Annapolis, mall security requested police assistance around 5:30 a.m. Friday when an impatient crowd grew to over 500 people, according to reports.

In Indianapolis, a store’s door was torn off its hinges, while an Atlanta crowd also knocked down doors, and police had to pepper spray Seattle mall-goers.

Hey. This is a once-in-a-lifetime basketball shoe. Burns from pepper spray heal eventually, but there will never be another MJ. Just think about that.

7 die in latest school bus accident in China

BEIJING The death toll in China's latest crash involving transportation for students has risen to seven, state media said Monday.

The official China Daily newspaper said an additional student had died in hospital, after four students and two adults were killed Saturday in southwestern China when the overloaded van taking them home crashed into a 195-foot (60-meter) deep valley.

Xinhua News Agency said the eight-seat van was carrying 12 students and the two adults. The others were all injured, two seriously.

The newspaper said the students were aged 14 or 15 and were in junior high school.

Xinhua said the crash happened on a mountainous road in Yunnan province. A local government official confirmed the accident but would not give any details. A local news portal in Yunnan showed a picture of the van, with all its sides and roof crushed in.

Badly maintained school transport has been the focus of public anger in recent weeks after a series of accidents in which children were killed on their way to and from school, leading China's safety regulator to demand immediate action to improve safety aboard frequently overloaded and badly maintained school buses.

Earlier this month, a school bus taking primary students home slipped off a country road into an irrigation ditch in the eastern province of Jiangsu, killing 15 children. Officials later acknowledged the bus was overloaded.

In the worst recent accident, 19 children and two adults were killed last month when a nine-seat private kindergarten van packed with 62 students crashed head-on with a truck in northwest Gansu province.

The crashes came amid a national debate over the poor condition of Chinese school buses and chronic underfunding of public schools, particularly in rural areas, which have lagged far behind cities over the past three decades of rapid economic development.

Road safety is also a serious problem in China, with many accidents caused by poorly maintained roads and bad driving habits.

L.A.'s greatest sports moments No. 2: Magic's junior sky hook

??

We asked you to send in your picks for the greatest sports moments?in L.A. history, and 1,181 ballots later we are unveiling the top 20 vote-getters. Each weekday?we will unveil a new moment until we finally reach No. 1.

No. 2: Magic's junior sky hook (32 first-place votes, 3,788 points)

Magic Johnson firmly established himself as the Lakers? offensive leader in the 1986-87 season, so it was appropriate that he made the biggest shot of that championship year.

Coach Pat Riley decided that season that Magic would be the Lakers? No. 1 option on offense instead of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA?s all-time leading scorer but also 39 years old at the time.

Magic?s scoring average increased five points from the previous season to a career-high 23.9 a game. He also led the NBA in assists, helped the Lakers compile a league-best 65-17 record and won his first most valuable player award.

The Lakers rolled to the NBA Finals, winning 11 of 12 playoff games to set up another matchup with the Boston Celtics. After the Lakers? fast-break offense led to two routs at the Forum, there was considerable talk of a sweep.

But the defending champion Celtics rallied for a Game 3 win in Boston and built a 16-point lead in the third quarter of Game 4. While most of his teammates struggled, Magic kept the Lakers in the game, scoring 27 points through three quarters and helping them enter the final 12 minutes down by only seven.

The fourth quarter was a classic. The Lakers tied the score midway through the period, fell behind by eight with 3 1/2 minutes left, then scored nine in a row to take a one-point lead with 29 seconds left. Larry Bird?s three-point basket with 12 seconds left put the Celtics ahead by two.

With eight seconds left, Abdul-Jabbar was fouled. He made the first free throw but missed the second. Boston?s Kevin McHale, battling the Lakers? Mychal Thompson, dropped the rebound out of bounds, setting the Lakers up for a final play.

Following a timeout, Magic received an inbounds pass from Michael Cooper about 20 feet from the basket. McHale wound up as the primary defender, but Magic?s stutter-step dribble left the big forward slightly off balance. Magic continued into the lane and put up a running hook shot from 12 feet over McHale and Robert Parish. It swished in with two seconds left for a 107-106 Lakers lead.

After Bird missed a shot at the buzzer, the Lakers had a 3-1 series lead. They won the title in Game 6 at the Forum.

Magic has called the ?junior, junior, junior sky hook? the biggest shot of his career.

?I started to take the jumper,? Magic said after the game, ?but I saw [McHale]? coming at me, so I decided to cut toward the middle. I put it up, and saw it as I released it, but then someone jumped in my face. I never saw it go in.?

The shot did go in ? right into Lakers? lore.

Tech N9ne on performing for U.S. troops during Iraq withdrawal

As the last of the U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq, independent rap artist Tech N9ne provided some outgoing entertainment in Kuwait.

The artist performed his song 'The Noose," which he says was inspired by military troops, to show his support for those fighting on the front lines. (There's video of his performance over at HipHopDX.com.)

Read about his first-hand experience after the jump:

"What affected me the most about my visit to the Middle East was how amazingly pleasant and humble those who are serving our country were, even while under some of the [roughest] and most secluded living conditions imaginable.

The mostly young men and women all had stories similar to my own. When I talk about being away from my family and missing my kids in my music, they told me they listen to those songs to get them through being away. They showed my crew and I the most love imaginable for coming and giving them a piece of the USA, and that's exactly what we did.

I told them every night that I would go into the middle of a war zone to show my appreciation for their bravery. While at Camp Buehring in Kuwait, I accidentally suffered two broken ribs trying to climb into an Apache helicopter. Afterward, even against the suggestions of the military doctors, I performed the entire hour-and-a-half of my last three shows under a lot of pain.

I guess that was my way of saying that nothing could've stopped me from rocking the mic for those same troops that are so far away from their loved ones, suffering a pain all of their own. Nothing! I wouldn't have missed it for the world! Merry Christmas to the men and women of the United States Military who keep us all safe."

Twenty-One Former Players Sue NFL Over Concussions, Accuse League of Concealing Evidence of Brain Damage

MIAMI -- Nearly two dozen former NFL players are suing the league over severe and permanent brain damage they say is linked to concussions suffered on the job.

The complaint filed Thursday in Miami follows a similar one in Atlanta earlier this week. It is the latest in a series of recent lawsuits against the NFL by ex-players.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of ex-Miami Dolphins teammates Patrick Surtain, Oronde Gadsden and 19 other players. It accuses the NFL of deliberately omitting or concealing years of evidence linking concussions to long-term neurological problems.

The NFL denies the charges and says player safety has long been a priority.

The players claim the NFL made misrepresentations about the seriousness of their injuries "with the intent of inducing NFL players, including Plaintiffs, to return to play as soon as physically possible after having suffered a football-related concussion and to promote an aggressive style of football that would attract viewers."

According to the lawsuit, following numerous studies on the risks of concussions, the NFL created a committee of researchers and doctors in 1994 to study concussions.

The committee was supposed to be independent, but members were affiliated with NFL, the lawsuit said, and the group did not include a doctor specializing in neurology or other brain research. When the committee published its findings in 2003, it stated "there was no long term negative health consequence associated with concussions," according to the complaint.

The former players are seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

The lawsuit notes that in 2010, the NFL replaced the leaders of its research committee, and that the new leadership described the data used in the past by the NFL to counter the long-term effects of concussions as "infected" and lacking in science.

Analysis: For euro zone, a year of deleveraging dangerously (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? With governments laboring under too much debt and banks hobbled by too little capital, 2012 is shaping up as another year of hard slog for Europe's economy that could yet test the single currency to destruction.

The Netherlands on Thursday became the latest country to report that output shrank in the third quarter, lending credibility to forecasts that the broader euro zone will soon be in recession if it is not already.

A generation that gorged on debt is now adjusting to what some are calling the Great Stagnation. Talk of a lost decade, like Japan in the 1990s, no longer seems outlandish.

So far so familiar. What worries economists is that the longer the deleveraging of government and bank and household balance sheets drags on, the greater the risk of market or policy accidents.

If the economy is already at stall speed, an unexpected shock could send it into a deep dive. In an age of globally integrated supply chains and capital markets, the impact on the rest of the world could be severe.

"Entering 2012, we are facing uncertainty on the grandest of scales," HSBC economists led by Stephen King said in their latest quarterly report.

The good news was that euro zone policymakers recognized that a break-up of the 17-member bloc could spark another great depression. But, despite signs of greater urgency, investors for the most part remained unconvinced that a strategy was in place to ease the debt burdens straining the single currency.

"This loss of faith is reminiscent of the collapse in confidence in 2008, when the wheels came off the global economy. Back then, forecasters completely failed to grasp the gravity of the situation. The same may be true today," HSBC said.

TALL ORDER

As the world economy slumped after the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008, governments had room for maneuver. Today, with fiscal austerity in fashion and interest rates near zero across the developed world, firepower is limited.

"Indeed, with the risk of recession on the rise, debt dynamics are in danger of spinning out of control," HSBC said.

The European Central Bank acted decisively on Wednesday to limit the immediate danger by lending banks a whopping 489 billion euros in cheap three-year loans. The cash injection will reduce the risk of a credit crunch and fire sales of assets by banks shut out of the wholesale funding markets.

But the ECB is at best buying time to help weaker euro zone members put their finances back in order and recoup competitiveness lost as a result of having weaker productivity and higher labor costs than core countries led by Germany.

It is the sheer magnitude of this task that is unnerving markets. Take Greece, which is racing to thrash out sweeping pro-growth structural reforms demanded by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to unlock a 130 billion euro loan needed to stave off default.

"This is a process, as we've seen in IMF program countries, that takes well over 10 years and that's as long as Greece will need with the help of financial support and technical assistance missions from the EU and the IMF," said Antonio Garcia Pascual, an economist at Barclays Capital in London.

Yet Greece is already in the fourth year of a deep recession. And even if the EU-IMF program succeeds, its debt in 2020 would still be a suffocating 120 percent of GDP.

How long will voters endure austerity imposed from abroad and, at the same time, go along with sweeping changes to everything from pensions to labor laws and the prizing open of long-protected professions and industries?

"Structural reform is essentially about a society changing its way of life," a senior European central banker said. "It's not obvious that creating extra liquidity can make those fundamental reforms easier."

QUESTION OF BALANCE

New modeling by Goldman Sachs dramatizes the challenge facing countries on the periphery of the euro zone.

In order to stabilize the net debt of the entire economy these countries need a sizeable adjustment in their current account deficits. This in turn points to the need for a depreciation in the real, or inflation-adjusted, exchange rate of as much as 44 percent in Portugal, 35 percent in Greece and Spain and 20 percent in Italy, Goldman estimates.

That means prices would need to rise less, or even decline, relative to the euro zone average for about 15 years in the case of Greece and Spain and almost 20 years in Portugal, requiring savage wage cuts in the process.

This required correction immediately throws up another huge problem: if the periphery is holding inflation down to zero to cut costs, core countries will have to tolerate prices rising above 3 percent if the ECB is to keep euro area average inflation on target at no more than 2 percent.

"This might be problematic for the ECB as certain core countries (such as Germany) could potentially have difficulties accepting such higher inflation for a prolonged period of time," wrote Goldman economist Lasse Holboell W. Nielsen.

GLOBAL DEBT MESS

The euro zone is not alone in its struggles to manage excessive debt. Japan's gross public debt has soared to more than 200 percent of GDP.

The deterioration has not prevented the government from selling its bonds at low and stable yields, but a new IMF working paper warns that over the medium term, the market's capacity to absorb new debt is likely to diminish as the population ages and appetite for riskier assets recovers.

The result could be a worsening of Japan's debt dynamics that poses a threat to financial stability.

"Without a significant policy adjustment, the stock of gross public debt could exceed household financial assets in around 10 years, at which point domestic financing may become more difficult," IMF economists Waikei Raphael Lam and Kiichi Tokuoka wrote.

And in the United States, alongside what most economists see as an unsustainable public-sector debt trajectory, families still have too much debt accumulated in the go-go years before the great financial crisis.

Household debt as a percentage of disposable income peaked in mid-2007 at 135 percent of GDP. It has since declined to around 120 percent but remains more than 20 percentage points above its 30-year average, according to Nathan Sheets, global head of international economics at Citi in New York.

He said it was reasonable to assume deleveraging would continue at the same steady rate - which would prolong the process into the second half of this decade - but the pace could quicken markedly in the event of a collapse of asset prices, a sharp drop in disposable income or a renewed tightening of financial conditions.

Which brings us back to the mountain the euro zone still has to climb in 2012.

"Given the ongoing stresses in Europe, such risks are not just abstract possibilities but rather all-too-plausible outcomes that need to be carefully considered, with an eye to reducing potential vulnerabilities," Sheets said in a report.

Anna Reid @ Kensington Central Library - Description

Anna Reid will speak about her latest book, Leningrad: Tragedy of a City under Siege, 1941-44, which follows the three-year siege of Leningrad during World War II. Anna Reid answers many of the previously unanswered questions about the siege. How good a job did Leningrad?s leadership do ? would many lives have been saved if it had been better organised? How much was Stalin?s and Moscow?s wariness of western-leaning Leningrad (formerly the Tsars? capital, St Petersburg) a contributing factor? How close did Leningrad come to falling into German hands? And, above all, how did those who lived through it survive?
